I bought a 96 Jetta for 600 bucks with some electrical problems.
Their story is that it ran like a "Swiss watch" when they got it, but the son of the man who I bought it from hit the fuse box with his foot and it fell down, sparked and smoked so they disconnected the battery.
When I looked at it, it would crank, but not start. I got it started last night by just spraying a bit of starter fluid in the intake and giving it a little gas. Now it starts as long as the battery has enough charge.
Since I'd never driven it before the fuse box incident, I don't know how well it ran. Right now it runs a bit rough and doesn't really have much power when I floor the gas pedal. My 93 escort with a 1.9 liter engine will squeel the tires, but this car just accelerates as though I was doing so gradually on purpose.
The most noticeable thing wrong with it is that the speedometer doesn't move at all, and the tachometer needle just vibrates very quickly in the "0" position. Are these gauges electrical on this car?
Also, a couple of the wires on the back of the fuse box are disconnected, and I can't really tell where they go. Does anyone have a schematic or photo of this part of the car that they can post on here.
Any help is appreciated. Feel free to ask questions.

get on ebay and search "VW Bentley" Find the one for 93-98/9 Golf Cabrio Jetta and Buy it!! The $60 you spend on it to learn what wire goes where and how to do JUST ABOUT everything else on the car will save you WELL more than the $600 you spent on the car. Trust me! I've been into Vw's for almost 10 yrs and have Bentleys for almost every model I have owned!
Here is a link to one I found quick!
