I'm not sure that it's possible to get a manual transmission in an 02 Explorer, but just to make sure we're on the same page, please clarify that you are referring to an automatic. Assuming 'yes' you're probably right that it's an adjustment issue.

It's an interesting procedure. If you'd like an excerpt from the factory service manual, send me a Private Message with an e-mail address for you that can accept PDF attachments.

Selector Lever Cable Adjustment

1. Rotate the gearshift lever clockwise until it bottoms out (first gear). Then rotate it counterclockwise three detents ((D) position).

2. Hang a 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight on the gearshift lever.

3. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to «Section 100-02».

4. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever.

5. Rotate the manual control lever forward until travel stops. Then rotate the manual control lever back three detents to the (D) position.

6. Using a suitable tool, lift the lock tab on the shift cable adjustment lock. With the lock tab raised, push the shift cable adjustment lock outward to the unlock position.

7. Carry out the following:

1 Connect the shift cable to the manual control lever.

2 Push the shift cable adjustment lock downward to the lock position.

8. Lower the vehicle.

9. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «Section 414-01».

10. Remove the 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight.

11. Verify that the engine will start in PARK and NEUTRAL and that the reversing lamps illuminate in REVERSE. If not, check that the digital transmission range (TR) sensor adjustment is correct. For additional information, refer to «Section 307-01». Adjust the TR sensor if necessary.
