Its almost like a whine, i have a hard time describing it, i guess you could call it a 'cranky' whine. You can really hear it when van is close to a wall like a ina drive through.

any ideas?

First....turn off the radio.....in case you are hearing radio interferance (I get this sometimes with my MP3 player adaptor to my friend's laptop when he is playing music).
Then....it may be normal air noise through the air intake.
You can check to see that everything is fully seated/closed as far as the air filter canister.....things that can cause more noise than normal.
However, my '96 does make a whine/whoosh noise through the air intake when I press the accellerator.....and it is normal....not a problem.

My 2000 is making a similar noise and it is the tensioner pulley. You should check inside the engine bay while the engine is running and try to see where the sound is coming from. If it is towards the bottom of the engine along the belt path than it could be the tensioner pulley, also check the idler pulley towards the front it's known to whine as well. I'm going to change both on mine along with a new belt. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

thanks for the replies guys, I checked the engine while idling and having someone give it gas and there is no noise. The noise is only when starting to move...so tranny issue? maybe ready to go? its hard to describe the noise it just seems to shudder, you can hear it a lot better in drivethru's because of the walls.

anything to worry about?

thanks
