Crankshaft Sensor? PCM? Camshaft Sensor?

okay i got a dodge 1996 ram van 2500 5.2l Engine Primetime Conversion.

the problem: after a few minutes of driving normally around town... it will shut off completely... sometimes it will start back up normally, sometimes it won't. when it don't want to start i have to wait maybe few minutes to an hour for it to start back up. and it'll start up fine.

the weird: the other day on the freeway i felt like it was going on and off like 6 times every ten seconds, i didn't want it to go off so i kept the gas flowing and it would go fine it was just pulling a little bit. it made it approximately 30 miles like that until i got to my destination. sometimes its fine and sometimes is just crazy. sometimes it goes off too on a stop sign(this i don't mind as long as it starts back up)..

Any knowledge would be GREATLY appreciated. it only got 109k miles

Do you notice this happening more often when your gas tank is low, say around a 1/4 of a tank?

nope. it's got more than half a tank now... i tought it would be the fuel pump too but i think the pump is okay... fuel level does not matter

When it won't start, does the check engine light come on when you turn the key to the on position, but before you attempt to start it?

Then it sounds like your PCM is good and so is the ASD relay. I would first change the ignition coil, then the crank sensor, if that doesn't fix it, change the cam sensor (distributor pick-up coil).

alloro sorry the check engine light does NOT come on after the van doesn't want to go on

it goes on af first but then when the engine is ran for what used to be a few minutes, it's now a few seconds and now it cuts off, i noticed the light not coming on anymore. so it's the computer hu?

if the check engine light comes on = the truck goes on
if the check engine light doesn't come on on startup, it'll just crank all day but won't run.

i have to wait until the i get the check engine light again for it to start again.

cuz it's got more than 1/2 tank i don't think it's the fuel pump or none like that.

what do you think it is alloro?!? AF Comunity??? World???

In that event yes, it is the PCM. That is as long as power is getting to it. If the ASD relay is failing the engine will crank but will not fire up, nor will the CEL come on.

The Auto Shut Down relay (ASD) is powered up when the key is turned on. In turn, the ASD relay turns on power to items such as the PCM, fuel injectors, coil, etc. In earlier models the ASD and fuel pump relays are together on the firewall near the brake booster. In later models it is a black cube relay plugged into the power (fuse) box under the hood.

aghrr..... it wasn't the computer. tho you did route me in the right direction. the pcm was shutting off and after switching it with one from the junk yard the same thing was happening.... so i checkked all the connections coming and going from the computer and i guess after reconecting cleaning and inspecting all the cables i found the one that was triping. i guess it was one of the ones i moved cuz after i cleaned and recconected all of them i put the old computer back on and BAM> started right up and never let me down again. it's being three days and it hasn't given me any type of problem....

so yeah it was just a corroted connection somehwere that i moved around and it 's fine now. Gracias for pointing me in the right direction.
