ac compressor on 1999 jetta

i was told my car wont start because the ac compressor is seized up. could that be true? cant i pop the belt off to check? and if so how hard is it to change it

It is true. A seized compressor can keep a car from starting (depending on the belt setup). You can take the belt off and run it for a short period of time to make sure that is the issue. The a/c compressor is not that hard to replace but you will need about 10 seals, the compressor, about 2 pounds of R134a refrigerant, and the expansion valve. You may be able to get away with only replacing the electromagnetic clutch. That will help to avoid replacing the seals and everything else.
