my 1996 suburban transmission will stop working after I drive about a 1/4 of a mile. tack and speedometer still work. After Truck cools down, it will drive 1/4 mile and quit . engine runs fine, trans won,t. Could my problem be a glogged filter?

Try replacing the fuel filter first since it a cheap item to replace. If you cannot blow through it,it is plugged

the transmission is most likely low on fluid or the pressure is dropping off after the fluid heats up..
this will usually indicate a new/rebuit tranny....
what does the fluid level condition / show ?
what is your mileage and vehicle maintenance with this tranny ?

well I now know that is not the transmission filter. Oh it,s glogged alright. I took the transmission pan off , drained the fluid, pulled the filter out.
The fluid had metal specks, and little pieces of metal in it. Also the filter had metal pieces in it.
Looks like Iam going to have to find a used or rebuild transmission:frown:
Thank-you for your advice.
Buying a used trans from the junkyard is like buying a pig in a poke. Ya don,t know what you getting till the pedal hits the metal.
Or should I order a rebuild transmission online? That is the question.
Anybody out there have any thoughts on this?

I got one off craigslist. The seller said he got it from a yard and did not need because it was the rearend going out and not the trans. He is 8 year Navy man going to 20. It took me 10 hours to put it in and it was worst then the one I took out... I now had a shop put in a rebuild and i am happy now. I wished I had a shop bench test it befor the work i did. Good luck.

The cheapest method to get a rebuild is probably ebay. If you watch it you can find rebuilt trannys for your vehicle for around $400. Of course, you'll pay a bunch to ship it and you must rely on the seller's reputation as to the quality of the tranny. It is a risk, but you can minimize by being patient and doing massive research and finding out who rebuilt it, what method they used, what parts were replaced, what upgrades or shift kits were used, etc.

A slight film of metal fines and friction material in the pan and in the filter is normal, especially if the fluid has never been changed. Any photos?

I have a 95 sub. that just quit moving. no grinding no clunking no warning signs. I was told a clogged filter may simply cause this issue. Any thoughts appreciated

I would start a NEW post with your issues ...
did the fluid level change any since this failure. If it now looks overfilled it could be the tranny pump.
the clogged filter would gradually cause a slippage. could be internal componet cracked. when did this suddenly occur ? cold start ? operating ?
