96 Camry. MAP sensor repeatedly going bad?

I had a cold weather start problem (had to tap the gas till car warmed up to start it in the frigid cold) along with slow bogged out acceleration. I read the code and changed the MAP sensor as indicated (problem solved). About a month went by and now my MAP sensor is bad again.

Anyone have an idea to an underlying problem? :confused:

What code are you getting? If it is clearly a MAP sensor code, then it may be the wiring harness or connector instead of the sensor. Check for loose or dirty connector, damaged or pinched wiring.

No idea what you used but you're less likely to have problems with an OEM sensor.

Yes the code is "Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit Range/Performance Problem". I used the same manufacturer MAP sensor as was in the car originally(found a used one on ebay). It says vacume pressure sensor on it. I understand that a used product could have gone bad also, but probally unlikely in the time period.

Connections and wires are fine. When I put in the replacement sensor a month ago the problem was gone. I will try reconnecting the sensor and trying to reconnect the original bad one to see if I get any results.

Is OEM a brand of MAP sensor? Or is it a different sensor you suggest looking at all together?

The original part number on my MAP sensor is "89420-06020" name brand "DENSO". I have found sensors that match the first 5 numbers but the last 5 are close or different. What part numbers for MAP sensor's will work on a 96 camry 4 cyl 2.2 L?

For example I found a "89420-0610" would that work? I have also found one stating for a cellica "89420-20110 OEM" would that work for my camry?

Call a dealer's parts department, or go to any of the online dealer's websites. You should be able to get the correct part number for your car that way. Then you will know what part number you should be looking for.

OEM is an acronym meaning original equipment manufacturer. That means a Toyota part from the dealer in most cases. Denso is a Toyota parts supplier so you probably have an OEM sensor. I'd verify your part number with the dealer as Mike suggested.

You could have a catalytic converter that is almost stopped up, even though this is on the exhaust side of the system, could be causing excess pressure on the intake side.


Could someone tell him how to check to see if it's his catalytic converter, I know one way is if it's really bad you will see it cherry red when you look at it. But I think they have some kind of tester for them that tests the temperature of them not sure exactly what it's supposed to be for sure, there maybe some other way.

If your intake vacuum fault readings are being caused by exhaust back pressure from a restricted catalytic converter, the rough test is to connect a vacuum meter to the intake, bring the engine up to 2500 RPM or so and hold constant.
Intake vacuum readings should hold constant.
If they gradually decrease, indicates excessive exhaust back pressure.
