I have a '97 Suburban that when you press on the brakes the parking brake light comes on, does anyone know what that means?

The "parking brake" light is also the brake warning light. It is either low on fluid or its seeing a problem based on what the proportioning valve is doing. I don't recall specifically how these are setup. Start with the basics, a visual inspection for worn out/leaking components will be your next step.

okay thanks,
I will do that but also today when i was driving home from school i noticed that i have to push the brake pedal all the way down just to get it to slow down. Do you think that could be just worn out brake pads?

As stated by Airjer, your brake system needs a detailed inspection before you wreck your self and/or some one else.

I'd be WTB U blew a brake line if the light is on and U have a low brake pedal. Take a look at the fluid level in the master cly...I'll bet it's low. If it is...add some more fluid and step on the brake pedal a few times and then look underneath for leaks.
