$335,000,000 FOR STD PREVENTION IN ECONOMIC STIMULUS BILL
Wed Jan 28 2009 09:58:30 ET

Democrats may have eliminated provisions on birth control and sod for the National Mall in the "job stimulus" -- but buried on page 147 of the bill is stimulation for prevention of sexually transmitted diseases!

The House Democrats' bill includes $335 million for sexually transmitted disease education and prevention programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

In the past, the CDC has used STD education funding for programs that many Members of Congress find objectionable and arguably unrelated to a mission of economic stimulus [such as funding events called 'Booty Call' and 'Great Sex' put on by an organization that received $698,000 in government funds.]

"Whether this funding has merit is not the question; the point is it has no business in an economic plan supposedly focused on job creation," says a stimulated Hill source.

How stupid!!!

only $350 mil went out in the first TARP and the next $300 mil is being held back for more oversite. If you think $335 mil is going to std prevention then you're really in need of the under funded mental health care program. Beg for better funding there, my friend.

ahem. You meant billion with a "b", right?

Yeah, they ARE talking about 335 million for STD education. It's buried in the stimulus package.

Rep. Mike Conaway from TX has an article about his opposition to it on his website.

Conaway Opposes Unstimulative Stimulus Package

Washington, Jan 28 - Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 by a vote of 244 to 188 Congressman Mike Conaway (TX-11) voted against the bill, and made the following statement after the vote:

“My problem with this spending package is not only in the massive cost, but also where and how the money is spent. Roughly half of the Pelosi-Obey spending package funds non-stimulative social programs within the jurisdiction of the Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee. For example, the bill’s original language set aside $462 million for equipment, construction, and renovation of facilities at the Centers for Disease Control and $3 billion for prevention & wellness programs, including $335 million for STD education and prevention. Regardless of our country’s need for these programs, there is no question that they are not necessary to revive our economy.

http://conaway.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=109758:lol: Bush has said "billions" so much that people now confuse it with the "millions" that they were familiar with before. After a few years of Obama, we'll be confusing "trillions" with "billions".
