06 Gas Cap / Engine Light

It's just been one thing after another so far this winter...

About a week ago I went through the car wash, and about 5 minutes later I saw a "Tighten Gas Cap" message. I thought nothing of it really...checked, and it was tight. Next time I started the car the engine light is on. I went to Auto Zone for a reading and they confirmed it was the gas cap causing the engine light. I was hoping the light would eventually go away, but it has remained on. I guess I'm going to reset the system by briefly disconnecting the battery, but does anyone know of something else I should look into? I have this feeling the light is not going to go away even if I replace the gas cap.

Thanks.

The code is required for a proper answer, other things can cause the " gas cap" code. It can only be cleared with a scanner, if the cap was loose the light will go out after about 10 drive cycles.

OK, I'll try to get the exact code...

Is it normal for the remote starter to not function when this happens?

Aftermarket, no. Can't see even an OE type doing that either.

This is the stock/original remote starter. If I stand by the car and try to use it, it just flashes the engine light and doesn't start.

I have no direct experience with this, but I cannot believe that an emissions code could disable the system, I would check with a dealer.

refuel with the engine off.....remote start should have a manual to guide you thru troubleshooting ...

I have a 2000 Impala LS and a 1999 Olds Intrigue . I have had the " gas cap " problem with both in the last 3 months . Replacing the original caps eliminated the problem on both . The caps are cheap so give it a try . If the light continues to burn , go to AutoZone and they can turn it off . Good Luck !

Keep in mind if AZ clears the code and the cap did not fix it, it will come back on.

There is a sensor in the evap system that checkes if there is a vacume in the tank. If not you get the light. Mine had this issue, but I was under warranty. the dealer took care of it. I'm not sure where the sensor is, or how hard it is to get to.

my ss has had a similar experience and no it will not start while the engine light is on, it will flash the lights telling you the remote is working but will not start as if you have already ran it 2 cycles with the starter

i had my light checked out at autozone and it is a evap leak at the gas cap, i disconnected the battery to reset the light and now when i fill the car with gas i push and turn at the same time and let it click several times when putting the cap back on and i have not had any problems in a few months with the engine light coming on
