I have 1998 4x4 suburban 350 and the transmission is slipping with a code and being felt. I found one used but I dont know if they are all the same. Where are they marked or tagged that it is a 4l60e? What should I look for to be some what sure that it MIGHT work? I also have a 1996 2 door 4x4 tahoe 350 and I was told it has a 4l60e in it, but the pans are not the same, but the amount of pan bolts are the same. They both have elect shift switch on dash, the 98 sub has auto 4x4 selction and the 96 has all but the auto 4x4 selction. Would the auto 4x4 make a diff in the trans or does it have something to do with the tranfer case? I dont want to buy one used and find out it does not fit. Should I use my old torque converter with 225,000 miles or the one I bought with the transmission that (so I was told) has 78,000 miles on it? Any tips on R&R would be helpfull as well. Thanks to all.. Dave

replacement of the torque converter is dependent on the contamination...a lower mileage transmission would not offer any guarantee of being in better condition...
what is the fluid condition and what is you maintenance interval...?
rebuild of the transmission would be a better path...unless you can get a 1 year warrantee on the scrap yard replacement...

17 bolt pan is not a 4L60E. Are both pans the same shape?

In addition, the 4x4 switches are dedicated to the operation of the transfer case, not the tranny.
Also, what tranny codes are you getting?

Thanks for all the information. The trans I have now has 225,000 miles and never been rebuilt. It is slipping going up hills and a reputable trans shop said it gone. $3,000 to rebuild it and the suburban is worth $3,500. I bought a used one for $100. on Craigs lists. The guy bought it from a pick and pull yard in LA and then found his rear end was making the noise and not the trans or so he said. 15 year Navy man and still in so I am trusting him. He pulled the pan for me and it was clean and had only a few (3) really small pin size sliver metal chips. I cut open the filter and it had some gold flakes in it. The trans fluid was fairly clean and medium (little dark) red with no burn smell. I would like to know how to clean it out before I Install it and is there anything I should look at before instilling it? Any tips on removal and installation would be helpful.

I would get a new torque converter.on your vehicle flush out the lines and radiator trans cooler....
particles inside the filter, metal shavings in the pan bottom don't sound normal...
the pan bottom should have a gray color , mud feel..soft not gritty..

I bought a used 4L60E transmission and was told it was good. It looked good on the inside ie. No metal, no brown band dust and I even cut the filter open and it was clean looking inside. I installed it and it has no reverse and stays in first gear until about 3000 RPM and then shifts and RPM drop to 1200 RMP. Could I have did something wrong? Will an adjustment of the shifter help? Can it be fixed with out taking it out? Any help would be kind before I off load this thing to charity. Thanks for your again.. I will start a new post as well with this ?
