94 Suburban possibly "knocking"

sorry for asking a question right off my first post. I will admit, i have a lot to learn, and need some help.

i have a 94 suburban, and recently it has been making a tapping/knocking noise in the lower part of the engine. i had a friend that knows a little bit about cars tell me its most likely a rod knocking, and he spelled doom and gloom for it. i have looked around on the forum for similar topics and found some, but i feel that mine is slightly different, because it is not a constant sound....it is light upon start, adn goes away quickly, but the majority of the knocking is happining in 1st and 2nd gear around 2-2.5 rpms...once im in higher gears/moving faster it is not noticeable AT ALL.so basically, when it is knocking, it is only for seconds upon accelerating from a stop.

any suggestions to prolong the life fo the truck? should i take it in if its this minor at this time? what should i do?!

Welcome to AF
No problem with asking questions.
Asking questions is what New Threads are for.

A good tech/mechanic with a trained ear may be your best bet on the noise.

One thing to check is the transmission/engine flywheel.
Does it have a good AC delco oil filter and good oil pressure.
A listing bar/pipe/steposcope helps locate noises.
Piston noise can sometimes be found by disabling the cylinder spark.

What type of engine do you have? I have a 1998 with a 5.7 / 350 in it. I has been knocking for the last 100,000 miles. I had a shop tell me it was a rod but the 5.7 in knowing for pistion slap. I hope this help. Do a search on pistion slap in the suburban forums and you can read more. Dave
