Just curious if I can get a thread going about the GTO strut rub/alignment problem that causes excessive wear on the inside edges of the tires. Myself and many others apparently have had to replace our tires after they shredded at only 10-15,000 miles.
Dealers won't replace the tires and GM has not issued a recall. There are class action lawsuits pending in California and a couple other states.
Anyone else in here have the problem?
In my own case, the tires began rubbing the struts at about 7,000 miles. The dealer adjusted the camber to get the tire away from the strut but would not replace the worn tires. At a little after 15,000 miles my tires began to shred and fall apart while driving. The inside edges are excessively worn due to the strut rub and negative camber setting from the factory. The outside and middle of the tires are like new.
The major cause of this is that GM installed 245mm tires on the car when it came to the US, but it was only designed for 235mm tires when manufactured in Australia. GM made the tire switch without making any other suspension modifications.
Without warranty coverage being honored many owners are stuck buying new tires which will only temporarily solve the problem until they begin to excessively wear as well.
If you are not aware of this problem, check the wear on your own tires. I believe it only is an issue with the 17" rims.
