Spedometer not right!!

I recently had to replace the spedometer cable. After the new one is in the spedometer doesn't sweep right. It seems to me that when I first take off there is a pause then it will move. Then as it does move you can see the needle jerking ever so slightly, like there is a little to much play in it.
So here is what I have done.
I removed the old spedometer cable which is two pieces. There was a short pigtail section that fastened to what I think is an adapter. The adapter is a "L" shaped piece that has a gear reduction to it (it states this on the adapter). The new spedometer cable is one piece and almost a foot longer than the old two piece. The parts store didn't have the exact replacement cable. Would this difference in length be enoughto cause my problem?? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Anyone??
the cable is binding...since it is new [never used?] I would say there is a too sharp of a bend in the cable routing...

After some calling around, I have learned that if the cable is too long it can cause the guage to act weird. I don't have any sharp bends in it. But the cable is definately to long. I ordered a direct replacement. An oem two piece cable that originally was on it. I sure hope it cures the problem.
