New Stereo install possibly shady at circuit city

I am about to have a new stereo installed in my '00 Firebird at circuit city but the guy told me he would have to charge me $65 to bypass an existing amp or make the amp work and it would go out inside a year. Has anyone ever heard of this? I bought a $129 stereo with free install and now is over 200 with them wanting to charge more. Do they not know what they are doing or are they working me over or is this legit?
