Can you adjust the freeplay in the steering box on an 88 suburban?

Yes, but but go easy as you can tighten it to the point it has no return- ability, if you have to go that far to eliminate the play in the gear box it is worn beyond an adjustment. The adjustment is done at the hex screw on the cover of the gear box.

Would the same apply to an older gearbox (1978). I have one in my Blazer that doesn't have too many miles on it. I lifted my truck and have bigger tires on it now. After about 1,000 miles it seems like my steering has loosened up. Might be the drag link, but I have a feeling it's the gearbox. I know everything else is good. Maybe the extra work it has to do with the bigger tires has worn it in and it got a little sloppy? The fluid level is good, pump is good. Sorry that this was a little off original subject.
