I just purchased a new 2008 (1500 2WD) Suburban (replaced a 2001). I noticed that the amp / voltage gauge in the dash seems to change. Most of the time, the needle rides nearly straight up, just over 14. But, at other times, I have noticed it to be in the 10 o'clock position (est to be at 12).
My old burb, and any other car I owned, would always stay in one position. Is this something new or something I should take to the dealer. Of course, I don't want my battery die at any point but if it really is at 12 then it sounds ok.
Thanks.

I would invest in a multimeter and actually measure the voltage with the engine running....do this also when It appears to drop off to the 12volts...
bringing the vehicle to the dealer may be a waste of time, also if you do find the voltage not to be in the 13.5 vdc-14.77 vdc range , but lower then this will give you factual data to support your claim there is a problem..when you do have them repair it...
you may bring it to them only for the dealer to say that they could not duplicate the problem...

I read where this is normal on newer trucks with Active Fuel Management. Should be something in the owners manual under "Electric Power Management".

I have a 2007 and mine does the same thing. Usually after I have been driving for 20 minutes or so it will drop down. It has never been a problem.
