My suburban died on the way home from vacation.
I have ign. - it runs when starter fluid is sprayed in.
Fuel pump is 6 months old.
Fuel filter is new.
There is pressure at the rail but I need to go back with a gauge tocheck the fuel pressure to see how much there is.
I tried checking the injector voltage at the disconnected connector. I am getting 12 volts across all the injectors with ign on and while cranking. There does not appear to be any pulsing of the ground signal. This is not what I was expecting to see. Is this a valid elec test of the injector? Or what might be missing?
Thanks,
Scott

Go easy on the starter fluid unless you want to blow the dip stick threw the hood.
Only use carb cleaner as a starting aid.
What brand of fuel pump?
If a Airtex drop it in the trash can and get a good AC delco/delphi pump.
The only true test on a fuel pump is to check the direct fuel pressure from fuel pump.
A quick test is to block off the return line and see if fuel pressure comes up to 75-85 lbs.
But do not run the pump at full pressure very long.
Also when testing fuel pump and pressure you need to tape a gauge to outside windshield or outside mirror and drive it on the road for 20 -30 minutes
until the pump gets has run a while to check for a pump fading out after hot.
Hard to start cold or hot and fuel pressure testing guide lines.
Check cold start fuel pressure.
Check engine running fuel pressure.
Check engine running on the road fuel pressure.
Then shut it off and watch for fast leak down.
Pinch off at rubber part or block off return line and check full pressure.
If pump has full pressure with return line blocked and low pressure without it blocked most usually the fuel pressure regulator is leaking or not holding pressure.
Later V6 and V8 gm engines should have 60-66 fuel pressure.
Cold start should be 64-65 lbs of pressure.
If you do not have full fuel pressure on a cold start the injectors will not squirt fuel.
Do not leave home without it.
Engine running should be 60-66 lbs pressure depending on engine load.
Full pressure with return pinched off should be 75-85 or more.
And if it has a fast leak down after shut off you have a leak in system.
Post back fuel pressure readings.

The suburban is an hour from me, it will be a couple of days before I get back to it.
The first thing I plan on checking is the fuel pressure. If it is not where it should be I either need a fuel pump or a fuel regulator. Is there an easy way to determine which one it is?
If the pressure is good I need a backup plan of stuff to check.
Did the injector voltage test from my previous post seem right?
I do have a spare intake with the fuel injector and spider. If take my spare spider and plug it into the injector plug I should be able to tell if the signal to fire the injectors is correct or not. Does this sound plausable?
Thanks

What year is it?
Is the security light staying on after key on bulb test?
Any after market remote starter or antifieft stuff?
What brand of fuel pump was put in it?
Go threw the fuel pressure testas outlined to check for fuel pump or pressure regulator.
And also check for spark to all spark plugs.
On the injector pluse you can use a injector pulse testing noid light to check for injector pulse.
For a fuel deliver problem check you can use a shot of carb cleaner in intake.
Let us know how it goes.
Another thing if fuel pump is not running good give the tank a thump on bottom with a rubber mallet or wood block.
Good Luck

I got back to check it out today. The fuel pressure is only 40, guess that's why it does not run.
I think the pump I put in was airtex but don't remember for sure.
It does seem to hold the pressure.
Could it be the regulator or do I need to put in another pump?
If I need another pump I think I might cut an a whole in the floor above the pump, that would make my life easier.
Thanks
Scott

To tell if a regulator or bad fuel pump.
You need to go threw the fuel pump test as outlined in post 2.
Airtex pumps are very close to junk.
But are warranted
If only 6 mo old take it back and ask them to give you a AC delco replacement pump.
Only replace with AC-Delco/delphi pumps.
It may start with a shot of carb cleaner.
If so and you can get it started it may run home.
On a Suburban do not try to butcher it up by cutting the floor board.

1-How would I block the return line?
2- If I disconnect the return line and crank the motor-
A-if the pump is bad, at 40 psi there should not be enough pressure to have any fuel in the return line.
B- If there is fuel being returned would that point to the regulator?
Does my thinking in scenario 2 seem correct?
Thanks again.

Pinch off or plug return line.
Or go to to the inline at fuel filter and check direct pressure from fuel pump.
