Had my catalytic converter stolen!

About a month ago, my neighbor, who I don't like, comes over and says he had the cat stolen off his truck and he suspects the neighbor on the other side of him.
I was thinking he was lying about it......maybe because I don't like him. :evillol:
Well I wound up leaving my old Z71 clear out back in the woods. It was parked over a little thorn bush, so I figured it was okay. I was wrong. I went to move it yesterday and it was loud....
I pulled up to the driveway and seen the sawzall marks on the rest of the pipe that was hanging there.
The only people that could see the truck were the bad neighbor, the neighbor they accused of stealing theirs, and an older couple that have a lot nicer things then mine. (and in no shape to walk over to where it was)
I called the cops and they "added me to the list"....
I thought it was strange he wasnt concerned with who was able to see it where the truck was at.... He even told me to straight pipe it......
He was actually nice and everything but still.....WTF?!?!? :screwy:
I was planning on an entire exhaust anyway, I think the cat was plugging up anyway. The truck has #7 exhaust manifold gasket leaking, and now the cat is off it has way more power....
What I think is the weirdest part is that I am not super pissed off.....I am irritated. If I seen them taking it, I still would have ran them over with my other truck.
For some reason tho, I am not fightin' mad.......that worries me...:frown:

Sucks they got it. That's why my truck is alarmed, a squirrel walking on it sets it off, and the wife's car is too low to the ground to steal it discretely. Plus, my neighbors all watch out for each other, works wonders for scumbag deterrent.

next time take a pic of him with your digital camera and call the cops for trespassing. it wont get your cat back but the cops will be building a book on the kid, repeated complaints on an individual doe's get their attention.

Maybe you can get a big dog to protect your CAT's!
I have bought four Catalytic converters from Catalytic Converter Warehouse.
They are worth nothing for resale, but for Salvage cons can make money.
If you what to play CSI,I would look for someone who collects scrap Metal.

I have heard storys around here they go for $78 to $200, and one guy told me $500......:dunno:
I have heard some are more valuable then others, just not sure what ones they are after. I have an '02 Z71 that has dual cats, I would like to keep them.......I thought about different traps I could rig up, they all end with bodily harm to the thief.....:evillol:

Maybe you can weld some razor barb wire on the back side of CAT's!
If they get cut,it will leave DNA.
You can rig some type of video camra too, and put the movie on YOU TUBE.
CAUTION - If you are riding a motor cycle watch out for missing man hole covers and storm sewer
covers,I heard they are worth some money too.

You don't want to do that, as f***ed up as the legal system is they'd probably end up successfully suing you. The secret here, is to do something that stops them from stealing it and doesn't give them any opportunity to file a lawsuit. I don't want to suggest anything... but to cut the cat off, one has to be under the vehicle, and if I remember right trucks aren't light... Just be sure to post 'No trespassing' signs first
Or if you just want to catch them, you could get a motion-activated trail cam. Some have night vision too. If you've got any friends that deer hunt regularly, I'd bet they'd have one you could borrow.
There was a used car dealer here that had over 100 cats ripped off in one night, and a repair shop that had every car in the lot de-catted. Damn druggies... looking for their next fix :disappoin

It's happening in commuter lots in the larger metro areas now. Obviously, SUVs are the prime targets, since they have higher ground clearance.
Some are suggesting that the VIN be engraved on the cat as a deterrent. That only works if the salvage yard follows the rules. Some areas are now required to get identification from anybody selling scrap. They have to keep logs of frequent sellers.
Their son was visiting our neighbors, and he said thieves broke into the house he has for sale and took all the exposed copper pipes out of his basement. Now he has to replace all the exposed plumbing.

I was going to do that to my newer truck, and also engrave "stolen" into it. I figured the thieves would just grind it off, or worse, the cat would rust out in that spot and I would have to buy another one anyway.

The metal internals that cats are made out of is worth more then the metal surrounding it. I've heard of it happening. If the extract the metal and take it to the recyclers they can get some good money for it.

To sell. They contain platinum and can be sold for decent money to scrap yards and recyclers.

In the Nashville area, they have a story of a metal scrapper that moved just over the Kentucky line because Tennessee was changing laws on accepting CATs for scrap and they didn't want to be held accountable. It's been on the news a few times down here. That's MESSED UP.
