I need to put a towing package with electric brakes on a 2003 Suburban 1500. What should it include? I will be towing about 3-5,000 lbs. 3-4 days a week for work. What would an original equipment towing package have included? Is there anything significant I will be sacrificing now? The Suburban has a Wiring plug of some kind underneath the rear frame and a towing button on the shift lever.

Good hitch and a electric brake controler.
And a trailer plug to fit your trailer.
And if it does not have a good external transmission cooler add one.
Also keep the transmission filter and fluid serviced.
Always use the tow button when towing.
Good luck

The OEM package would have included a hitch with a 2" square receiver, aux trans cooler and a 7-pin trailer plug on the rear bumper. Depending on the year, it would have come with a handy wiring pigtail that plugs into the fuse box under the dash and gives you all the wires already labeled for splicing into whatever brake controller you want to add. I forget the option code, but your dealer should be able to tell you what it is. It will be located on the sticker in your glovebox. I am pretty sure the '03s came with the pigtail as my '02 truck came with it. If yours is missing, just get that and save yourself the trouble of hacking into the wires on your own. There a maxi fuse that you add under the hood too... Easy to do.
