2001 Suburban 114,000 - New surpentine belt and TPS installed week before this happened.
Truck ran fine since install of above parts. Truck sat for a few days. Started up fine. Ran it for about a 1/4 mile then smelt rubber burning ... air bag light came on ... battery symbol came on in message center. Stopped and started truck. Checked connections and battery. All fine. volt meter was at 18+. Ran truck for about 45 miles. Cleaned up around battery ... removed battery caps ... let sit for 2 hours ... replaced and checked everything again. everything is fine 2 hours later.
Checked alternator at AutoZone and tested fine. It however was only putting out 33 amps. Was advised not to replace until it happens again or shows signs that it needs replacing..
Should I replace it now or wait? No error codes to read. Truck has been running fine for past 24 hours.

How old is the Alternator ? Sounds Like the diodes are starting to go. As far as the smell of burning rubber did you check to see if the armature bearings are starting to go ?

18v output and a max of 33 amps, get rid of it, both of those readings are bad.

Any recommendations for alt type?
No longer towing trailer with it. Used to haul wood pellets a few times a year and the odd project at home. Used more to bring the family up camping.
any input is appreciated.

Ac-Delco has good rebuilts.
Or a lot of parts stores have brand new not rebuilt replacement alternators.
Aftermarket rebuilts are not so good.
After that much voltage on charging system look things over good.
Could also have damage battery.
Good luck
