Hey, my 03 explorer O/D light is on, I went to a shop to see what was up and they said it was my solenoid in the transmission, and a couple gears were out of wack. How long can I drive on it and how much should it cost to get it done, they told me like 2,500...Is that true????? Please email with any answers..Hopkins4508@sbcgobal.net

My 01 F-150 had the same problem. A solenoid in the tranny blew and I had to replace the whole thing to the tune of $3,000. I lost all gears but one. I could still drive it but only enough to limp to the dealership.

That price sounds in the ballpark for a new tranny. It's hard to tell whether they can just replace the solenoid(s)....

Their is a button on the shift lever you can push in to lock it when you are towing. Did you push it in by mistake. I did this more than once check it before paying big money.
I would pull the pan before I got the transmission rebuilt. If the oil is burnt or metal particles are in the pan a rebuild is in order.
I had a 1997 Ford F-150 with an E40D transmission. The solenoid pac was around $60.00. You just unplug it drop the pan and remove 6 or 8 torx bolts. Reinstall it about 1 hours job. Install a new filter and gasket. On jack stands it would take a full morning.
