04 Mountaineer - poor fuel economy

My 04 mountaineer is a v6 all AWD. I am currently getting 13 city/hwy mpg. Anyone having the same with theirs? Any Idea on how to get better gas mileage out side of selling it?

Seems these types of threads pop up a lot, and the answers are usually the same. What is your driving style? Do you accelerate aggressively? Are the tires properly inflated per the door sticker recommendations? When's the last time a tune up was performed? Are you using ethanol fuel? Do you have an aftermarket air filter? If so, your MAF may be contaminated and need to be cleaned, etc., etc., etc.

For what it's worth, I drive quite aggressively in my 2000 Mountaineer V8. I get typically 13 mpg city and 17 mpg highway. It actually doesn't seem to make much difference in city driving if I accelerate quickly or gently.

I got 19mpg on a recent hwy trip. I have an 05 with AWD.

A Mountaineer is a lot of weight to pull with a v6, the v8 gets about the same gas mileage with a very gentle driver.

The 2004 batch of Mountaineers that rolled out of the factory seemed to be all lemons. Statistics show that 04 owners have greater problems with their Mountaineers than any other year Mountaineer owners.
Get rid of your 2004 and get a 2005-2006. Reviews for those year models are exceptionally great and recommended for buyers. Trust me, I know. I love Mercury Mountaineers and do have a lot of knowledge on them besides owning one.
