Would anyone know what would make the "brake" warning light go on in the dash? also, it seems that the cruise control has stopped working since the brake light has gone on. The car is a 2000 Alero V6

Not sure about the Alero, but when I had a 96 Corolla the brake light would come on because I had a fluid leak.

The brake light on my 02 Alero comes on sometimes... usually along with the Anti-lock light. It never stays on for long and couldn't find any problems.

One of the first things I checked was the brake fluid---its fine. The pedal stays good and solid when pressed & held---which tells me there are no leaks in the system. I haven't attempted to pull any error codes yet.

If it the abs light not the brake light, it could be a speed sensor located in the bearings on all four tires. My did that and it took me 5 trips to the shop and eventually driving around for two days with my mech,s computer on my lap looking for a sensor that would intermintently stop working.

The brake light can be triggered by the switch under the parking brake, or by a wheel speed sensor going bad. The signal from the sensor is used not only for ABS, but also by the traction control system. Usually you will get brake, ABS, and TCS lights when a sensor is bad, but not always.
