hey everyone..hope all is well. my bike has been parked for 5 months..battery died and wont hold a charge. had almost no gas or gas treatment this whole time...put a new baTTery...fresh gas...turns on fine...idles steady and if i use the choke...she revs up to 6-7k rpms if i let it. but as soon as i turn the throttle....it wont go past 2k rpms and then cuts off. been tryin all day to get it to go so i can blow through whatever is possibly causing this but it wont go so i cant even get on the road and try to clear out anything. any clues? please help!!! 98 zx11..carborated. i know i f'kd up by letting her sit for so long. the thing is.. the other day when i was boostin battery to get bike to start... it was reving fine via throttle...now no good. tried disconnecting battery cables..bike stays on.

Are you saying that before putting the new battery in, you jumped it and it seemed ok at that point? And the problem started right after the new battery?

Did you put the fuel in it after it started acting up, or before?

One carb or even two having problems wouldn't kill it, it might start running rough but wouldn't die. So I kinda doubt that's it.

I'm wondering if there was a lot of condensation on the walls of the tank or rust that got washed to the bottom when you filled it? It seems the problem is with fuel delivery to the carbs, rather than a problem inside any of them.

Also see if there is a vacuum line to the fuel petcock. A lot of bikes use this, it shuts the fuel off when the engine stops. Engine vacuum opens it when the engine begins to run. If the line splits and it's sucking air, the petcock may be open under high vacuum (like choke on) but when you give it throttle vacuum level drops and if the vacuum line is sucking air it may be closing the petcock and cutting the fuel off....

I just did a quick check...seems your bike has a fuel pump and relay also. I don't know where it's located...if it's near the battery, check the connector and line. Follow the fuel line from the petcock to find the pump.

I know some bikes the pump is under the side cover in the battery area...make sure the battery didn't kink the line or anything if that's the case...

On most carbed bikes with a pump the fuel pump is just a boost pump to ensure full flow under heavy throttle...but can restrict flow if it breaks. If you suspect this, you could run a piece of fuel line from the petcock straight to the fuel rail for the carbs and see if the problem improves...

Often bikes with pumps ddon't use the vacuum petcock I described above...

ok...will check as soon as rain lets and update u. i was curious if a stator would cause this symptom? i did remove the battery and tank and etc..so the things u r saying makes sense. i hope its that..cause i would feel stupid if i damaged anything more trying to save some money. is it a bad idea to give a bike a boost using a car?

oh and to answer ur ?'s.... i jumped it..she turned on and revved via throttle just fine. nice throaty..like normal. but onced turned off it wouldnt turn on alone with out boost. tried boosting again...and then it would turn on/over period. it would try to...but engine wouldnt turn over so i figure i flooded with all the trying and let it sit. also seemed battery wasnt holding charge so i bought the new battery and put it in and then this is the problem. no gas untill after everything was done... including problem...then i put fresh gas thinking this was the problem and still nothing. also.. i saw light rust on the lip of the tank right where the fuel door is but didnt see this till i put gas. no rust that i can see floating or heavily on the walls but who knows at this point. vaccum idea makes sense since i put in the new battery and moved tank around.

On newer bikes you don't wanna check to see if it's charging by pulling a cable...the regulator/rectifier can get damaged but I doubt you hurt it trying that just once.

Most bikes you can tell to some degree if they are charging just by watching the headlight. They usually don't put out any strong charging voltage until they get off idle...so you will usually see the headlight brighten a bit as you give it throttle. When they are running off the battery there is no change when you give 'em gas. (or may even dim the light slightly)

If the stator was killing it, you'd probably see the headlight weaken considerably and the motor would start to break up, then die.

What you describe really sounds like fuel starvation. I think something happened when you moved things around. I had a bike once that would run fine, then die after cruising at steady speed for a couple of miles.

Turned out the fuel line was kinked under the tank. When the line got warm and softened up a bit, it would flatten out and cut the fuel off....

lmao...well whataya know richtazz.. hip hop hurray. seriously dude im excited. i didnt even realize. lol.
jeffcoslacker.....u r definitely on the money. after a couple of hrs of running thru everything again.. it appears that the wire that connects to the fuel pump isnt giving any current at all. all my fuses are fine and i swapped out what appeared to be the relay to the fuse pump with a buddy of mine and the relay seemed to work on his bike just fine. so i guess thats not the right one. cant find any other visible relay or in line fuse so im stuck again.

What did you use to check the fuses? They can appear fine but be blown in a way you can't see.

Was the relay a typical automotive type relay?

If so you can take it to any auto parts store and match it, they don't cost much.

i used a voltemeter...and checked for continuity as well. the relay appears to be the same as an automotive one but even if not its only 2o bucks. however... i swapped it out with a buddy already and his bike was fine with mine and i still had same issue with his relay. so i think its the wrong relay. i have a manual but cant seem to find the location of the fuel pump relay.

Is it possible that I have a short or fried the wire?

27002 is your fuel pump relay/sensor...looks like it straps right to the pump or very close to it.

I found this pic of one...is this what you swapped?

Yes that's it..and it is actually clipped right on the side of the battery. Check this crazy $hit though... my friend that I swapped with...doesn't even have a fuel pump on his bike. He has a different bike but the relay is identical..numbers and all. I never put his on my bike...but we put mine on his bike but if he has no fuel pump...then I guess I didn't really get anywhere. I just figured that since his bike ran fine...there was nothing wrong with the relay. Went to a shop I know..the guy was cool enough to give me another relay for free so I will put that on later and see if it does anything. i just need to find why the power wire to the pump has no juice. Hey jeffcoslacker..thanks for stayin up on this with me.

I think I'd pull the line that goes to the carbs off the pump and see if it pumps fuel..I'm pretty sure that pump only works on demand, so if it has sufficient pressure ahead of it in the line, the relay may not energize. but if you take the line off it should pump, if it's going to. Watch where you point the line. It's possible the pump may only energize once the engine is running. I wish I actually knew more about bike pumps, but it's just not something I've had to deal with much yet. At any rate you could start it and see if it begins to pump, it'll start off the fuel in the carbs...I'd direct the fuel into a container.

Is the pump pretty easy to access? Looks like an inline filter on the tank side of the pump, did you take it out and check it to see if you can blow through it? Blow backwards against flow direction first, so you can see if there's any big trash in it. There's probably a screen in the tank around the outlet too, so if the filter is loaded, there's probably bigger crud in the tank.

The pump is easy to get to and change or test. but the bike is running now!!!! It was the damn relay. I replaced it and after a minute or so it was roaring like a lion again. I feel like an idiot cuz that was the first place we started! Now I've got to tape up a million wires...and put back a million screws and clips. Lol. At least I learned a lot about the fuel system and my bikes electrical system. Jeff...thanks a million dude. I'm gonna spend the next couple days cleaning her up and tighting up everything. Finally gonna go out on friday...and to a major bike event so that will kick off my riding season with a blast. I feel like the world has just been lifted off my shoulders..and any other problems will be left behind me on the highway.
