Freon is full, compressor spins, but AC is still warm

Hey guys. 88 suburban, 186k miles, with warm air from AC. The compresor engages and spins, the freon is full and not leaking, but the air is still warm. The blower motor inside doesnt blow hard at all even on high, but the air that is coming out of the vents is defintely hot. What to do, oh what to do?

With engine off- see if front of clutch hub turns very, very easily- (with one finger even) also feel for little "catches" as you rotate it) if both are true- then you have most likely lost all your suction reed valves on the ends of the 6 pistons inside- and a new (reman) or used pump is in order-- the Orifice Tube will have schrapnel in it as well from the old pump- Have seen quite a few- sympton are - compressor turns, but no pumping- gages would prove it out- ususally only 20 psi differential (high to low) when this occurs.....H-6 compressors from 96 through 2000 are susceptible to this condition- reeds were fixed in 2001 model year........

Are you usin the R12 or the R134a? you cannot mix them.

I'm Sorry- I blew it-- I read your post as a 1998 suburban not an '88- so forget the spin test-

It has benn retrofitted to R134a. I didnt do the conversion, so Im not sure if it was done properly. There is adequit oil in it, and the compressor does sound like it may be straining (noisy) to spin, so I will try a salvage yard compressor I think first.

You may want to check the operation of the "temp control door".
Try this and see what happens.
1. A/C off.
2. Engine running at operating temp.
3. Fan on "high" (that's an issue we can deal with later)
4. Temp selector to "hot". Should get hot air out of vents.
5. Temp selector to "cold". Air from vents should gradually cool down to outside air temp.

before buying anything get a set of gauges and measure the pressures,,,this may simply need the air removed from system....this reveals itself when the high side pressures are too high....also your temp control door may be stuck in the heat mode, check vacuum lines and door operation...
i have seen too much charge cause bad operation also....too much refrigerant is not good at all....this will cause compressor to fail as compressor will try to compress liquid refrigerant then you may need a new compressor, but gauges will show that by low side pressures too high and the high side pressures too low [compressor not pumping]..good luck
