I can smell engine coolant when it's running, what should I test and or check (and how do I do it)? I don't have any codes, and besides a small exhaust leak, it runs fine. It was losing coolant for a while, but it hasn't lost any for about 2 - 3 weeks.

Could be the lower intake manifold gasket but the 7.4L engines are not known for bad gaskets.

Besides a leaking water hose, I would also check the water pump, heater hose quick disconnect fitting, and heater control valve.

If you can smell it it is leaking or has leaked.
Watch for coolant in the oil.
For hard too find leaks they make a dye test kit to put in the coolant.
Also a pressure test cold and war and hot.
Look on top and underside of everything that has coolant in it or running threw it.

Check from rad cap back to floorboar heater core.
Post back what you find.
