Last year, I bought a 1969 chevelle.
I called GM and got the papers and they said it was only
a 300 deluxe. So I'm not going to go all original. I'm going to do a
clone SS. I want to put a 350 in it because currently it has no tranny,
engine, interoir and everything else. But I was looking at some for sale
and it seems as if they are not getting their moneies worth.
Any tips????

So you got it to make money on?
Your doing your research AFTER you bought it?
What are your plans for it?
I got mine in a similar state. It was an ex 1/4 mile car, rolling chassis is pretty much all I got. I wanted it that way. Now I can put what I want in it, Not what someone else wanted. I am not real concerned about what I can get out of it when I am done. No matter what I make it, (ss clone, custom, or original) It will be my "corvette", driven only for my enjoyment. A toy that, if it can double as an investment, GREAT. If not, no harm done, its what I want...:2cents:

A SS optioned Chevelle never had a small block engine in 1969 so it could not be a clone with one. All the SS optioned cars came with a 396cid in 1969.
You would be better off just building a nice street car that is not trying to be something it never was. It would cost a fortune to clone a SS 396 correctly (could never fool an expert though) and you could never recovered those cost unless you were dishonest when you sold the car and lied to the buyer about its true heritage and that would be fraud.
BTW - 1969 was the one and only year in which Chevrolet allowed the SS 396 (Z25) option on the Chevelle 300 Deluxe 2 dr, there are web sites devoted to the 69 300 Deluxe Ss 396.

Good info. I was thinking I'd never seen a 2-door "post" SS. I know the 300 Deluxe is a post body. Interesting... Kinda like the '72 GTO "coupe"... After '67, no more coupes (Pontiac called their post body a coupe, and the non-post was a "hard top"). I know Chevy called theirs the "hard top coupe"...

I'm not really looking to make money on it but i'm young so if the gas prices get to high, I won't be able to afford it. But I don't want to dump $20,000 into it and only be able to sell it for $10,000.

Muscle car prices may taper off but I doubt the bottom will fall out. This isn't the stock market. Guys buy them as a toy. I don't know about you but I always can always cut back somewhere else to make room for a toy I want...
I think if your worried about loosing a ton of money on it, then you should fix it up the way you want it. Maybe put an overdrive in it so you can afford to drive it when gas hits.......well lets not go there.....
If all else fails and you can keep it in the same shape and sit on it, I would be surprised if you didn't make money in a few years...

I agree, don't try to clone it. Just make it what you want and keep it simple. Do it right, replace rust with metal, use quality parts, and you will find someone will appreciate it more if you do need to sell. Try finding parts at swap meets or through this board instead of buying new, That could cut your costs as well.
