this sounds like a bad encoder motor...have dtc codes pulled to verify.....

how often do you replace the transfer case fluid?

how often do you use 4X4 operation?

I live in Michigan and use 4x4 on snowy days. The truck was used and well taken care of by the previous owner. It has 150,000 on it and I have not changed the transfer case fluid since I bought it 7,000 miles ago. Not to sound silly but what are thd dtc codes and where is the encoder motor?

since you just purchased this,,, when it is 4x4 weather use auto 4x4.... locked 4x4 is for off road/plowing at slow speeds...use of locked at hwy speed will damage 4x4 system quickly...transfer case fluid should be blue... if you see gray color to the fluid or worse black then you know it has not been maintained correctly....I find with my usage 30-40,000 mi the fluid needs replacement.... also all tires should be with the same wear if tires are at different wear levels this stresses out 4x4 drive train....the transfer case encoder motor is mounted on the side of the transfer case this engages the 4 wheel drive....this usually shorts out.... in your case its unable to engage,,, with the repair faciity that can gather the dtc of the 4x4 system , you will then know what is bad... then report back with dtc , and i'll and others can help with what has to be done to correct....

found out that the t case actuator is working but the front axle actuator is not engaging. think that may be the prob, or what else can I check

others have had this indication and found out that the encoder motor was bad.... what are the dtc ? if the dtc says encoder motor then it is the encoder motor....the front axle actuator engages the front axles together thats it..........the encoder motor puts the vehicle into four wheel drive......what is the color of your transfer case fluid?????? if it is gray or black then change this first it is possible that the encoder motor is sticking.....when did you last replace this transfer case fluid [trac II ] ?

took truck to a shop today and they said there were no codes coming up, so I'm taking it to the dealership. I'm sure they have a better scanner than the little shop I took it to. the first place said that all electrical was fine and it was my transfer case. Fluid appeared to be OK

The encoder-motor is located on the drivers side of the t-case. This motor is the unit that shifts the t-case to the selected position from the dash switch.

If the selected position light blinks and then goes back to the original position it means the encoder-motor is not sending a feedback signal to the 4wd module that it has gone to the selected position, or it may have gone to the selected position but the internal switches in the motor don't see it.

IMHO change the encoder-motor and up grade the t-case fluid to the new GM blue fluid.

Dealer ismflushing both axle and t case and replaceing w/ tracII fluid and I will be replaceing the encoder motor. Is this a tuff job for a novice wrencher??? Also the motor that this transfer case calls for is about 250.00 bucks, is that a good price? The one the dealer wants to put on is 650.00---Ouch

Was it checked out to know what the problem is?
Some dealers are replacing a resister in the motor to fix them.
But proper testing first to see where the problem is for sure.

see if they will do all this for 800.oo or less... that would be a fair/reasonable cost......some have had to pay 1100.oo....others bought motor for 200.00 and installed themselves......
