98 suburban fuel pump

if my fuel pump was gone what would the symptoms be?? The truck wont start in the morning but later in the day I got it started and it ran but going down the road it lost power if i gave the gas pedal to much and again this morning its back to just turning over and not starting . I can hear the fuel pump trying to prime when i turn the key over but nothing ??.. any ideas

Check the fuel pressure.

From what you describe, it could be the fuel pump.

how does one go about checking fuel pressure on this??

The fuel pressure spec is 60 to 66 psi and you check it with a fuel pressure gauge.There is a schrador valve on the left fuel rail.You can check it this way too and is messy keeping a rag around the schrador valve.With the key on without the engine running,push down on the schrador valve and if no pressure comes out,the fuel pump is junk.The dealer and a Carquest auto parts store are two places to go for a fuel pump,both are made by Delphi and Delphi makes GM's fuel pumps.Airtex and Carter are two to stay away from,they are junk and will not warranty them.Carquest did have problems with their fuel pumps when Airtex was their supplier and ditched them.Carquest's fuel pumps are now made by Delphi and Bosch,the Delphi is the better one over the Bosch fuel pump.Anything made by Bosch is junk.

so i dropped the skid plate and beat on the bottom of the fuel tank and the loud humming of the pump went away and the truck went back to normal just like new but is this a fix or just temporary ?? it starts like normal now but am still concerned it will leave me stranded

Sounds like your pump is on it's last leg if you can whack on the bottom of the tank and make it run. If I were you, I would replace it before it strands you somewhere far from home...

Replace the fuel pump now. (voice of experience). If you don't you will soon have a towing bill to deal with too. Changing the fuel pump is not to bad. The toughest part I had was getting the fuel lines off. The autoparts stores sell the tools to do it - don't use the plastic ones though.

Just wondering if the fuel pump was replaced? Did it correct the problem? I'm have the same issue with my '99 5.7. The more you step on the gas, it seem to loose more power. As you let off the gas it seems to accerate. I was leaning toward failed pump, but all post that i've read said the truck would not start. Thanks.

low pump pressure or a lack of volume, also a restricted fuel filter. 30,000mi r/r filter if not try filter. another possiblity is fuel regulator. that is why fuel pressure test is best before spending money to replace componets. filters need regular servicing......
