What do non-modellers mean when they say "thinner"? Acrylic thinner, enamel thinner, lacquer thinner, or others?:confused:
I had a hard time determining what type of paint i saw at an art shop when i ask the owner about a glass paint. She only said, i must use "thinner" for it.:(

It depends on the type of Paint,
Acrylic Paint can be thinned with Water, Windscreen wash for a car and special Tamiya acrylic thinners.
Enamel paints need there own Enamel thinners.
Car paint will usually need Cellulose thinners
They will tell you what to use if you ask.

The first time I just used "testors" thinner, but I might just save money and use paint thinner that my dad has.... Both smell the same lol

Tamiya Paint = Tamiya Thinner
Tamiya Acrylic = Tamiya Thinner (water work, but not very good)
Testor = Testor Thinner
Testor Acrylic = Water or Tamiya Thinner
ModelMaster Acrylic = Water or Tamiya Thinner
ModelMaster = Testor Thinner
Umbrol = Umbrol Thinner (hard to find in some shop)
that all I use

U guys don't get me.
Suppose u find an obscure brand of paint and u don't know what type it is and the shop owner (who knows no modelling) only knows that this paint needs "thinner". He also doesn't know or unsure about what type of thinner to use, just "thinner". So in this case, what kind of thinner would be safest?

if he dont sell thinner with paint.. you will need to try more than one...
but you should stay in normal paint.. it's a bit easyer :D

Open it and smell it. Does it smell like rubbing alcohol? An enamel paint? Tamiya acrylics? LAcquer paint? The three types of hobby paints all have distinctive smells, which smells closest to it?
I think you should just use lacquer thinner, lacquer thinner is a universal thinner, works with enamels and acrylics too.
