Evo VI WRC Build Diary

Back into another "project". This time a Tamiya Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI. Started this kit in late 2001, intending to make it a quick build  Was going to convert it to Tommi Makinen’s Monte 2001 winning Evo 6.5. Now I've done an about face, not only will I build it in the much more attractive 2000 Evo VI livery but will use the kit as an experiment in some major structural work.
In fact I was in some doubt if I should post these early pictures at all. It is an ambitious project and could very likely end up being too big a task to complete satisfactorily. So if this thread disappears in the next few weeks or months then you'll all know it was beyond me and are never to speak of it again! Agreed? Okay now please sign these forms and come look at the pictures :)
First up, here is the Evo body with a new 'Tommi Makkinen Special Edition' front end that was introduced on the 2000 Cyprus rally (or thereabouts). This resin piece is from Studio 27 and is nicely moulded and looks accurate enough to me.

Next two shots show the bonnet (hood, engine cover, whatever), driver’s door and boot removed. At the moment I think I’ll stick to removing just the one door. If things go well I may take the other one off later. I have to thank darrenj for turning me on to the Hasegawa Tritool etched saws. Combined with the old back of an Exacto blade trick they made removing everything a piece of cake.

Last shot is a close up of the prototype door hinge. Stole the idea off the Midnight Cruising website. It is constructed of a length of brass wire inserted through a piece of brass tube. Seems to work well for a first rough attempt. Only problem is the door droops a bit too much when opened. Will be time consuming to get everything to sit right, especially the boot. If it all gets too hard I may just have to glue everything in the open position.

Been tinkering with my SEAT Cordoba as well. However, this is a white metal kit which I find a very unpleasant medium - can only stand to work on it in short bursts.

This should be good! Are you looking to make a diorama for this model, such as some roadside repairs by Tommi?

Don't give up on this!!!
The removal of the hood leads me to believe there will be an engine going in here????

Very nice idea, I have the S27 Transkit as well, but i'm planning on doing a copy of the TME road car. Please keep us updated with photo on this, as it should be great.

You are one piece of courageous modeler!! I don't have the guts to cut my models open for the extra details!! Stunning.
Yeah, what about the engine? Do you have enough reference material for detailing the engine bay and booth in the back?
Anyway, good luck and keep us informed!!

Looks great so far. Maybe you could pinch the brass tube to tighten up the door hinge. Also mabe you could make the hinge wires go into holes in styrene block inside body so you could install door after painting. Whatever don't give up.

Consider the forms "signed" :D If this is going where we think it's going, this is going to be another awsome project.

Thankyou for the recognition RallyRaider, but what happened to your door's A pillar? A bit to close for comfort?
What is the name of that site you found the door hinge??

Thanks for the suggestions 935k3 (have you built one of them :)).
The hinge is just a very quick test to see if the concept will work. The door and door sill have to be built up yet, the final working hinge will indeed be anchored as you suggest. The hinge is nice and tight, the reason the door droops is because the way I've thrown it together the metal tube musn't be completely vertical. Will take some head scratchin' to figure out how to make it so.

Thanks for the support everybody.
Yes there are plans to transplant an engine in there :D What I've got planned will rate pretty high on 'fudge factor' scale. But hopefully will look the part - even if it isn't completely accurate.

No problem Darren. The A pillar of the door doesn't connect with the main part, Tamiya designed the kit so the wing mirror fits in there on a triange of plastic.
Midnight cruising website address is: http://www.phoenix-c.or.jp/~mizutani/index.html check out his Evo IV and V
I notice you have only removed the one door from your Focus too. Would probably compromise the strength of the body too much to remove the co-drivers as well, don't you think?

No I haven't. You have more guts than me for cutting up a kit like that. I am pretty confident I could open up and hinge things but I just don't want to do the work, so admire waht you have done and i'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

It certinly isn't - but should this work, guess what will follow! :toothless
No plans for a scale Tommi, but I just realised that it should fit rather nicely on my Rallye Sanremo base. :)

Na I don't have guts... I've got a second kit! If things don't work out the cut-up shell goes in the bin and the replacement comes out. Easy :)
The second kit is a bit of a christmas tree, I've already transplanted the chassis to a Hasegawa Evo IV I'm working on and the tyres will be used on somthing else too.
What takes guts is to tell the whole forum about it. If I screw things up then everybody will know about it :hehehe:

Been a busy week for me (as will the next few :() so not much modelling done. However here is a quick update. Been mucking about with engine pieces from the Tamiya Mitsubishi Pajero 1992 Paris-Le Cap kit. Kind of close to the Evo VI engine ;) - it does say Mitsubishi on one of the cam covers! Photo shows a trial fitting of the block, held together with blutak. Just beginning to realise how much work this is going to involve

That's amazing work! The actual cam cover is very simple and square. That seems to be a 4G63 engine but with the cam cover for the Evo I through III. With the EVO IV the cam cover changed on the 4G63, but it's very basic. Probably can be easily built out of styrene sheet. The intake manifold looks almost dead on! Also of note, rally spec engines do not have radiator fans.

Thanks for the feedback JDM Evo7.
I know the cam cover is wrong, I'd probably make a new one if I had some 'MITSUBISHI' and 'DOHC 16 VALVE' script to put on them.
Didn't know that about Rally Spec cars not having radiator fans.
Thanks also for the pic, is that a road or Group N car, doesn't look like a Group A/WRC.

Doh, why I didn't notice that. I was going to make the 4G63 myself for the Evo VIII, but it's actually made already.
Now, gotta go get the Pajero.

yep I think removing 2 doors from my Focus could comprimise rigidity. I am seriously thinking of removing the rear hatch after those fantastic pics you sent me. But we have to remember that the body will be set on the chassis flooring after and thus alot of rigity will return. I just think with 2 doors and the bonnet cover gone it is harder to work on hte body and engine bay(sticking guing sanding filing) it can easily go CRACK!!!!!
Dudes check out some massive cutting here...

how do you make the opening doors??????

Haven't actually made the doors yet Zerrocool.
Just cut them out so far using an etched razor saw and the back of an exacto blade. Still undecided how to go with the hinges, got a few different ideas to try. Don't know when I'll get back to this.
