How to pronounce decal

Do you pronounce decal with a short e, a long e, or an accent, as in daycal (which is how I say it). Just curious

I think the yanks say decal all short, sort of like speckle with a d.

LOL, I never knew how to pronounce it, so I always just avoided the word.

This is an international forum so I suspect there is going to be a very wide variation in pronunciation.
Personally I've always said 'dee-cal', so I guess that is a long e.

It's not just the Yanks, here in the UK I've most commonly heard it pronounced like speckle, although occasionally I've heard someone use the long a pronunciation.

Hey...if you want to really confuse the issue....
I am British born, lived in South Africa and now live in America....and I pronounce it dee-cal....can't say I've heard it pronounced any other way either....

On the contrary, I've never once heard a yank say Dee-cal with a short A. The only time I've heard it pronounced Deck-uhl was by a somewhat inebriated-sounding Brit ;) :p :devil:

Dunno where the word got started, but it's a common term and used for other products beyond models. Why don't we adopt a new international standard?

Printed waterslide graphic transfers. Any more beaurocratic, and we can start charging for the administrative costs of setting up the new standard. Of course, some of us could call them "those damned things I cut, dunk in water, and ruin my models with because they break, won't conform, don't match, cause me to lose my hair, my mind, my sanity..".

So much easier than worrying over Deckuhl, Deecal, or Daycal.:bloated: :devil:

You want to talk about pronounciation, here in America is the only place I have ever heard the word height pronounced 'heigth' yes that is right, they prounounce it with a 'th' on the end....

Did anyone ever think maybe, just maybe, the Americans were pronouncing some words totally wrong?

It's pathetic, everytime I go to a hobby shop the owner pronounces it differently... like u go up and ask "I'm looking for Bee-Boo-Ray-Goh" and the owner'd be like "Oh, u mean Bee-Boo-RAHHHHHHHHH-Goh" and I'd be like "Yeah, I meant Bee-Boo-Rag-Oh!"

I was supposedly pronouncing it right, but people in Kansas didn't understand, because they call it ta-MY-yah.

Always said it "dee-cal" or "thing" :D Who cares how to say it, i'm amazed that we are able to go through 4 pages just ranting on about words, I say everything the more lazy way.

Most Americans don't realize most of the rest of the world/other languages pronounce the letter "i" like the letter "e". Outside the US, you say Tam-eye-uh and you'll sound like a moron!

the hobby shop I go to does some crazy business with tamiya, they pronounce it tuh-mee-ya. I once asked one of the workers if they can special order fujimi kits, and as soon as I said "fujimi", the guy looked at me as if I said " have you ever ate tommato flavored choclate, it was a wierd look, a veeery wierd look. :grey:

OK, now if I remember right from my Japanese lessons at uni then the 'i' should be pronounced like the 'i' in shit! So it's Ta-short mi-ya, not Ta-mee-ya. Although when you say it that way it doesn't sound right. Personally I prefer Ta-mee-ya as that's how I'd always said it ... until I joined AF :D

However, I could be talking bollocks, it's been 8 years since I learnt any Japanese :rolleyes:

at the beginning i didnt know how to pronouce decal but now i say Dee-Cal, as for Tamiya i pronouce it Tuh-Mee-Yah. Japanese words are pretty easy to pronouce as soon as understand their rule of pronouciation, A="ah", I="ee", U="ooh", E="eh", O="oh". when i first heard someone said Tuh-Meye-Yah i gave them a weird ass look, i guess they were using the English rule of pronouciation.
