Let's break the ice: RALLY

I like rally. Whether north american or world rally, I love it.

I often go into the back roads and practice. It a passion for me.

I like the technical aspect of it because there is alot of improvisation. I'm using a FF setup. I'm getting better at mastering pendelum techniques as well as emergency situations.

Ohhhh... I also love snow conditions.
I can do moderate drifts at up to about 90 mph, but they're a little tricky at times. At 60 mph I'm comfortable with.
I have loads of fun.

Anyone else like the technical aspect of rally???

Yup, I enjoy driving around with my uncle in Sault ste. Marie. He has a nissan truck, and he lets me practise power slides, and it is tons of fun, and I can do a good job of controlling them, at least at low speeds. I recently did it with my mom's suburban while turning towards the dump, adn it scared the crap outta her, but I had complete control!! I just hope I never lose control, cuz that could be scary.
Yup, love rallying, wanna be at least an amateur competeter someday.

Where is Sault Ste Marie?

Isn't it Ontario?

Chris

Dillweed: Yup, the Sault is where Lake Superior meets Lake Huron. Population is about 80\000. And power slides in a 120 hp nissan is, well, kinda hard to power slide, except on ice or 8 inches of snow.

I also like the technical aspect of rallying, especially the cars. I personally think they should remove the turbo restrictors, but everything else is mint (especially the out-of-cylinder combusion to keep the turbo spooled up.)
Can you describe exactly what to do for certain manauevers, as I don't wish to learn the hard way. I also like driving in snow, it really gets you involved and often allows you to drift nice and long.
Who are you rooting for in the WRC? I like Burns in his Subbie, but so far he is doin bad.
Don't you wish everyone loved rally as much as you, then you could learn so much about it!

Definitely Burns. He was doin' better last year.

Oh yeah, that's 138 hp and 148 ftp.

I'll get back to you another time, gotta go

Expaining how to do manuvers in a car is like trying to explain to somebody how to do a backflip. It comes with experience and you have to know your car.

Now you must know the basics of drifting like the role compression has to play in it and other things like weight, stiffness of suspension and wheelbase.

I can't explain it, I'm sorry. I'd have to show you, give you lessons or something. It is very touchy at about 80 mph.

I'll give you one tip though: Practice your handbraking in parking lots and desert intersections. Once you have mastered coming as close as YOU want to everything, you are ready for more.:)

A challenge is getting an 87 nissan Kingcab to slide, but is possible.

There is a club in Japan devoted entirely to oversteer, it is really quite amazing.

i flipped my old car practising rally, and strangely enough we flipped it back over with my dads truck and refiled it with oil and voila it ran like always. looked like hell though. therefore i bought a car much more suited to rally this time so as not to have that happen again (i hope!, itd suck a lot more to flip a 02 impreza than an 86 pontiac sunbird)

that's crazy...

what's the best way to drift?
i've seen people use the handbrake, but i think it hurts your engine
is gas brake gas brake?

Chris

Actually, see if you can get a Gran Turismo (original) book, it has great strategies in there. But using the handbrake is fine, but push in the clutch so it doesn't stall. Just when you're going around the turn, pull up the handbrake for a bit, then release. What you are trying to do is overpower the traction on the rear wheels, so they will slide. The regular brake will work aswell, but don't lock up the front tires.

And be sure to practise in a parking lot, so you don't crash and wreck your car/yourself;)

hey, no handbrake for awds! youll screw up the diffs. the subaru wrc car has a neat center diff which disengages when the handbrake is pulled, making it an fwd so it doesnt hurt it, i want that setup!

Chris

But if you push in the clutch, then it will dissengage the wheels from the engine, and shouldn't hurt your driveline that much.

LjasonL

it will disengage the wheels from the engine, but the wheels will still be connected to each other through the 3 different limited slips, and stopping 2 of them while the other 2 are still turning is not a good idea. same reason u cant tow an awd vehicle with 2 wheels on the ground like a conventional car, u have to use a flatbed. it goes all over it in the subaru manual.

OK, I see. I remember car mags saying it does awesome handbrake turns, so there must be some give.

maybe they were talking bout the rally car? im afraid to try em for myself, afraid ill slide it around then try to keep driving and hear all this grinding noises and stuff.

I've got a dune buggy with a 100hp VW engine and am a co-owner of a huge property up my red bluff/redding, CA. I love to take the dune buggy off road and do rally style driving. I can drift fairly well with a decent amount of space and i would love to take my car rallying if i could find a good road.

Anyone know of any good roads up north of san francisco?

Jan 18 was time for them to get back to me, but I forgot to send the question (I sent another one, so my mind said I was dune with Subaru, but I wasn't). So I'll send the question off now;)

wicked!

in gt3, i'm trying to drift without the handbrake, and only with the brake by keeping the revs up while sliding after braking

i live in west michigan and i have no idea where to find places to practice rally n such, any suggestions?

if u wanna drift well, then there is a great way to intitiate it, and to hold it if you are good enough. You're car will need to have adjustable brakes and be rwd, but apart from that horsepower is no problem. Put all the brakes on the front wheels, and when going into a corner, brake and accelerate at the same time. racing drivers use it to bring the rear round when the car understeers.

I like taking my Z off road, but it scares the hell outta me...

The first time I went off road in it, it was myself and 3 other friends all stuffed in, we were flying down this back road that was cut into a hill... one side went up, the other side dropped off and went down to a valley...I let my friend who is used to fwd drive, and he scared the hell outta himself... When I took over, I got too brave and oversteered around a corner and ran into a pile of dirt... we were lucky we didnt go off the edge :)

The most recent time, there was a semi crawling up this long ass hill before my house, and there is a dirt road that has an opening at the bottom of the hill, and another about halfway up the hill... I figured I could fly down that road and use it as a shortcut... it wasnt a great idea as I had a hell of a time keeping the rear end straight going down that road :P

Off roading is fun... especially in a Z :P I wanna rebuild the motor from my moms old '83 toyota tercel 4wd hatchback and beef up the suspension a bit, and have my own rally beater

How do you drift in an automatic. Brake Gas Brake Gas. I've got her sideways a little, but never been able to keep it long. I either spinout or it straightens out.

unconvinced

Yeah, nothing's more useless than a FWD car with a gimp (automatic) transmission.

The technique goes like this: as you're headed towards the corner, keep going past the apex to the used car lot, and trade the thing in for a manual-transmission MR2 or Miata. If neither is around, then a 240SX, RX-7 or BMW should do.

No, really. You'd probably be looking at using the handbrake a lot, perhaps even against some partial power (if you've got FWD). You'll be drifting, but you'll be going really slowly as you do. If it's really slippery, you probably won't wear your parking brake too much, unless you're really aggressive with it and you're doing this stuff long enough to heat up the parts.

Otherwise, reverse-donuts are pretty much your last recourse. Enjoy.

depends on your tranny alot

does it go 1-2-D or 1-D-OD?

If its 12D its like a manaul 3 speed.

I drift my t-bird pleanty, its scarry as all hell. I come at corners, go wide and start into the turn, give enough gas to break the wheels loose and partially spin them out facing slightly too far, go with it and straiten out. Fastest i've done it at was 60, wont push my luck. :p
