I'd suggest to start out with, as required post the year and engine.

Does it do it on warm starts too, or only cold starts?

If only on cold starts, you may want to try a crankcase cleaner and/or Lucas oil stabilizer. If that doesn't do it, either live with it or replace the lifter. Does the oil pressure guage read pressure while it's clicking?

Only on cold start. Never when hot.
I'll look at the pressure gauge tomorow morning.
Do you recommand a crankcase/lifter cleaner ?

I would try a cleaner. No guarantee it will help, but worth a try.

Make sure you are using a good oil filter like AC Delco or Wix. Some of the "cheaper" filters allow oil to drain back. If you are using a good quality filter, you might try a full synthetic 0W-30 oil. Another suggestion is to use a quart of Rislone in place of 1 quart oil on you next oil change.

A can of Sea Foam ususally does the trick.

I had this problem when i got my 2000 sil 5.3l after the engine had 30,000mi the ticking at start up for 10 -40 sec then gradually dissappear. I put 3-4oz. of marvel mystery oil in engine oil no more than this amount. measure exactly too much is not good. if problem goes away lifters had debris or carbon causing them to drain off after shut down ususally over night.if this is the case change oil after engine has been driven several miles fully hot this will aid in debris removal when changing oil. never change oil when engine cold. you may have to repeat this for a couple of oil changes to clean up this containination. my ticking has not returned 110,000mi now..........
