replace an american made alternator on my 94 camry..and one month after ,it is making a loud noise whenever i accel. sounds like a bad intake or muffler sound. but it is all coming from the alternator.my original was a japan made wich is 70 volt. i bought the american made wich is 80 volt..could that be something??the NApa guy i bought from said it would be fine. now its making a rattling loud sound when i accel. should i be worry and repalce it with an original or will it be fine??

First I would check to make sure that the belt is tightened to its specified amount. Next I would check to make sure that none of the bolts have either rattled loose or come out completely. Also was there a different design or way that it was made between the american and japanese model. I don't know a whole lot about camry's as I only work on my sister's if there is a problem. Most of the time I'm under the hood on my geo metro. But the same goes for mine there is a canadian model and a japanese model and only one of them will work. So I would suggest that you take it back in and have them run the model numbers to make sure that you have the right one. Do this before you go about checking belts and tightening bolts. Also I have found the parts at schucks to be priced a bit lower than the ones listed at napa auto parts. How long ago did you buy the new alternator. You might also want to check the fuss and make sure that everything is ligned up correctly when you put it in.

Well, we have 12 volt system on our cars. You probably wanted to say 70 watt. I do not think wattage has anything to do with noise. It is rather mechanical.
Check your belts tension like flashlight suggested.
Get a mechanics stethoscope ($5.99 at Harbor Fright) and check alternator bearings.
If noise comes from alternator it suppose to be under warranty.
Good luck,
Sam

Sounds like a bad rebuilt. Wattage isn't the issue. Just get a replacement and hope this one is better. NAPA used to sell a better grade of rebuilt parts than the other places like Autozone. Reports of late make me believe that ship has sailed.

To add to what DFBonnett posted, be sure you are not overtightening the alternator belt. That can put too much stress on the pulley and bearings, causing the alternator to make noise and fail prematurely. That said, it was most likely just a bad rebuild. When you take the replacement out of the box, spin the pulley by hand and make sure it spins easily.

just an update. actually i didnt check but the smoke that was coming out was because the alternator belt actually broke off. so i replaced the belt with a new one..but it is still making that loud airplane noise..so im thinking its a bad rebuilt.its can still run and the lights are gone. just that the loud noise is still there. ..anyone know how long i can run the car if its a bad rebuilt?? cuz it can run fine, just that the loud noise is still there..

When I saw the title, I think I already knew the story...LOL!!!
On top of my QuickStrut debacle in my CAmry, my '95 Prizm (Rolla) needed an alternator about a month ago. I'm now on my 2nd one.
1st one was "Reman. in Mexico" and exhibited whine.
Returned it for #2 which couldn't even pass the test at AutoZone. Was directed to a 3rd A.Z. which had one "Reman in U.S.A." (cool, right?)
Welp, it went about 1 day before it started exhibiting whine. (Sounds like you've got a turbo under the hood, right?)
Anyway...........I'm not gonna bother with it right now. I am so sick of stuff that doesn't work, I can't even begin to explain to you how disgusted I am. :swear:
Most nat'l chain auto-parts offer a lifetime warranty, so I figure I can either do potentially limitless exchanges & never find one that *doesn't* whine, or maybe concede to just letting the sucker whine & know that if it ever dies, I can always exchange it for another.
Either way it's a pisser, for sure! :bricks1:

benieo, there is almost no way to predict the life of that alternator. That whining is telling you that something is probably misaligned inside it, so it will likely crap out before it should. I don't think it can be narrowed down much more than that.

I have to agree. It's like trying to predict when a lightbulb will burn out. Impossible to guess.
Taking a wild guess on the root of the problem, it's possible that at some point that alternator pulley seized, causing the belt to snap. The smoke you saw was probably the belt trying to turn the alternator pulley while that pulley was seized. That could have snapped the belt. The alternator pulley could have freed itself up when it cooled down. If that is the case, it will likely happen again. You should have a warranty on the alternator and since it's relatively quick and easy to change, I would do it as soon as you can. Hopefully you will have better luck than redgtdi.

well its been 3 months now and my second belt just broke on me. im thinking its because of the alternator being that its got a different watts/volt as mentioned in my tread.. should i go ahead and replace with a new alternator..cuz it seem to be breaking my belts..2 now.. i prob go out and get me the correct alternator and replace it to see what happens..what do you guys think?? or should i just replace the belt for the third time again.

Time for a new alternator. The alternator output capacity has nothing to do with it failing, just a bad bearing or a bad installation. If I were you, I would be tempted to go to a salvage yard and get one out of a similar vehicle from Toyota.

Maybe you are buying junk belts. Try getting one from a reputable parts house like NAPA.

\they have been from napa, the premium ones to, all 3 of them..i'll prob just replace it with a new alternator..if this one burns out again.
