Rear Brakes?

Hi

I have a '98 K1500 Sub, and am wondering if there is a way to tell if I have the leading/trailing or duo servo rear brakes without pulling everything apart? I just replaced the front calipers and rotors, and will be replacing the rear brakes soon, after I replace the axle seals.

Now, how do I adjust them? Both adjusting holes on both sides are blocked. Shouldn't there be rubber plugs there to remove to adjust the star? The only openings I have are the inspection slots closer to the top of the backing plate. Are the plates that are blocking the adjusting holes just breakaways that I'll have to bend out of the way? I don't want to break anything, I've replaced enough since I bought the burb just a few weeks ago.

There should be some sort of removable plug, whether it is rubber or steel. I just did the exact job you will be doing today on a Tahoe. The one I had looked like steel inserts. Remove the one towards the rear of the vehicle (this one had two, presumably to make the left and right backing plates the same). One thing I would add, however, is that I NEVER adjust brakes through the covers in the back. Reason one is that if they need to be manually adjusted, chances are something is wrong, and I want to see what. Reason two is that if you keep adjusting them up and never remove the rust lip that forms on the outside, you WILL break something when you finally need to get them off.

When you do the seals, if yours has the Eaton locker in the rear, get a very small telescoping magnet, it will make removing the C-clips much easier. I had a hard time using picks, and it was considerably easier having it on the hoist than it is to be lying on the ground.
