:1zhelp:Hey guys, I am also currently looking at a 1987 Nissan 300zx non-turbo, it's in great condition and all and the owner is asking a resonable price for her. My real question is how much work would it be to install a turbo on this particualr Z, and how much would this cost me? (if you could provide me with a few sites where I could purchase a turbo for this Z that would be greatly appriciated)

Thanks,

Well I discovered that the z31 is an odd one...
For some reason the z31 has a different engine crossmember..
They made this to clear the turbo.. ok well why didn't they use the turbo crossmember???? odd.

Basic list...
drivers side exhaust manifold
turbo
turbo j pipe(from turbo to intake)
turbo intake
turbo ecu
turbo injectors
turbo downpipe
engine crossmember

everybody else chime in I'm sure theres more

check out AZ-zbum.com. It has notes on where he did one himself. it's listed under the engine swap section.

price depends on if you can find a donor car or not... crossmembers aren't cheap if you need to purchase them separately from someone, unless they're parting it out, even then it won't be cheap.

ways around finding a new crossmember are usually dropping the a/c and making a manifold to relocate the turbo where the a/c used to be... you can find someone to custom make a manifold for you, such as someone like SATAN (z31performance.com and 88hybrid.com) or you can get someone local to do it, the easiest way being a pipe off of the n/a manifold, or turbo manifold if you can find one for cheap.

any further questions you can PM me as i don't frequent this site anymore

if you install Turbo on a non-turbo its gona cost u more $$$$
so i think u should change the engine to VG30ET and good luck mate :)

lets break it down shall we...

cost of a used vg30et long block with turbo ~700-1000
cost of all components associated with swap depending on donor car ~500-1000
stock performance from the vg30et

now, turbocharging an n/a

custom relocation (depends on ability to fabricate) ~ 50-500
aftermarket t3/t04e ~600
turbo ECU and injectors ~ 200
much better performance than stock.

either way, it will in all likelyhood be cheaper to turbocharge the existing motor.

there are some hidden costs and snags on swapping the turbo in there, but overall it will be cheaper... just depends on your mechanical aptitude
