Hi, I have a 1993 Chevy Suburban, everything runs fine and was told when I bought it PP in 2005 the tranny may need replaced in the future.
Last year, right around snow season! I was driving to work and the truck would only shift into 1st and 2nd gear. My husband called a tranny shop and from what he described, the shop immediately said it needed replaced to the tune of 1800.00.
I don't have the funds to have the truck towed to the shop to make sure this is what the problem is. Anyone had this type of problem and did you need to replace the tranny???
Thanks.

Welcome to AF.
It can not be fixed or checked over the phone.
You need to find a good repair shop and have it checked out to find the problem.
It could be a minor or major problem.
Watch out for transmission chain stores they are replace transmission happie.:grinyes:
Check around Ask around
Word of mouth.
Family friends coworkers neighbors business people and delivery people.
Mailmen and parcel delivery people get around and notice a lot of stuff.
Even a good parts house knows what shops are good and not good.
Chamber of commerce and better business bureau and city hall.
If you find a good referral to a repair shop go look them over and talk to them.
Look for a clean looking busy place with nice people running it.
Ask a few questions and ask about their qualifications and training.
Not all places have trained tech/mechanics.
If they do not find a place that does.
Even all dealers do not have all trained techs/mechanics.

After finding a REPUTABLE transmission shop, talk to them about the possibility of the electronic sensors or regulators in your transmission being bad. I had a similar problem in my Jeep and have heard that there can be the same kind of issue with GM transmission. The sensors/regulators that tell the transmission when to shift can go bad. The fix usually intails removing the pan and replacing the sensors, which ends up being a WHOLE lot cheaper then rebuilding.

Hi, my husband was thinking it was a sensor, took down the pan and noticed alot of metal shavings, of what I have been told, that is not a good sign.
The positive side is, I have already received 2 replys from people inquiring about my truck for sale, even with the trans issue.
Hopefully just get some money out of it and get a small reliable car that is less likely to break down:banghead: , can you say Japanese??? LOL:grinyes:

Yes very much metal in the pan is not good.
But sometimes a new filter and fluid will help.
Did they repalce the filter and see if it helped?
Also did they check the computer controls and shift solenoids and wiring?
