Dupli-Color White plastic Primer

Hi Guys,

Well I finally did it I took the plunge and tried to primer my F50, well needless to say it came out absolutely woefully. Basically what happened was a clear spray came out of the can rather then the white I was expecting also the coat on the car now looks like a dull clear coat rather then the white I was expecting.

Although this happened I am kinda pleased with the fact that I left a smooth coat on the body of the car but the other parts like roof and engine cover are really bad, I put far to much on them.

Im wondering has anyone used the Dupli-Color White primer before cause i think what ever came out of the can wasnt primer at all, it was kind of gooey. Sorry its the best way i can describe it, I know that heating the can in water would thin the contents out but It was the colour of the coat that I am more concerened with....Any ideas, or was I just unlucky enought to get a bad can.

Are you sure it is white and not clear plastic primer?

LOL...good question, never actually thought of that, but it definately said "White Plastic Primer" on the lid.

Im wondering is it just a faulty can, it would be just my luck considering tis my first time priming or using cans.

Mybe it's just that a cap from a white primer can and the clear primer can got mixed up? :confused:

Are you spraying parallel to the surface? Try holding the can upright and spraying it and see what comes out. Sometimes, on a new bottle of Krylon white primer i use, the first few seconds come out as a clear spray, before the straw inside the can starts picking up the primer. So try spraying for several seconds in the air. If white primer still doesn't come out, I would take it back to get an exchange.

has the can been stood for a long time ? maybe in the shop?

Sounds to me like u havent shaken the can enough and the paint hasnt mixed in the can - sounds like all u are spraying is the thinner element in the primer - if the can is left for a long time then the thinner rises above the paint and comes out through the straw first. It will be goey coz of the thick paint at the bottom of the can..

Always, always, always test on a piece of paper or cardboard (or whatever) before you spray the parts. This allows you to determine whether the can/nozzle is defective, whether you have ther right color, whether you shook it up enough, need to heat the can in some warm water, etc.

I know of no company that makes clear primer (but that doesn't mean they don't!).

I know for sure Duplicolor makes it. It doesn't have filling properties, though.

Yes I did shake the can beforehand, my arm nearly fell off by the time I went to spray. It was sitting around for a while in my room before using but like I said i did shake it a lot before using.

Jimbob - I think you are right about only spraying the Thinner element, I checked the parts last nite and they have all gone very soft as if the primer was melting the plastic. I did spray the can for a while before I sprayed it on anything but foolishly thought that was the color it was supposed to be.

Daggerlee - I will try spraying the can upside down tonight to see what comes out.

To be honest I think it was just a defective can that I got, Thankfully I only used it on the F50 which was battered and brusied already (dont ask, lets just say i am learning things the hard way) I will buy a new can at the weekend and try it on the F1 model and let you all know how i get on.
