Is your clear coat peeling on your door trim?

I had issues with my clear coat peeling on my black door trim along the window.
I used Dupli Color Auto spray Clear top coat..5.oz can 4.44 at my local Advanced Auto. I am happy with the results. No not professional but it still looks great. I will post pics. The only prep I did was taped off area and covered window areas along with some of some of the body with some news paper. Used alcohol to clean area I was clear coating.. Also a few weeks back painted my luggage rack with Dupli Color trim paint as well,no clear coat on this. It also turned out good. If I took the time to sand better it could have been flaw less but none the less it still looked good. I will post some pics later..
So I thought I would need to repaint black before I clear coated but I did not and the result was better than first thought.So this stuff does work... Hope this helps. One tip the other areas I did not cover I used car wax for a protective layer so over spray would get on it. That was for the clear coat. Just clothed off
As for the luggage rack I removed this and hung with a wire coat hanger from a tree. LOL It worked... Gary..

On my parents windstar the whole trim is starting to peel off the door...... What year is yours?

As you can see from a distance its looks fine.. If you are picky you will see the imperfections. This was a quick job and the results will show it. But a walk by in a parking lot or drive way will be less noticed.. But this is what I was looking for.. It was driven me crazy every time I glanced at it and it looked bad. So as you can see the roof rack which now shows no metal where the paint was flacking off and the clear coat well it looks clearer. No not perfect but from a distance its acceptable. May work on later to improve some but for now its better. Took less than an hour for this on the clear coat patch. Took a half a day for the roof rack. Had to sand, prime and paint it..

Also for your body plastic trim molding and bumper cover I use Turtle wax F21 super protectant with sun stop. Its way better than other brands on this Advanced auto brand type protectant on my tires only.. Also F21 works great on the door handle areas if they are not body color matched. F21 does not tend to leave the silicon ash like the other brands do when they wear off meaning you don't have to put on after every car wash. I do mine about every other car wash sometimes two.. I have a 2001 Windstar doing the same thing. I think your results came out pretty good. Certainly the after is better than the before so I'd call that a success. I may have to try that. Thanks for posting the pics.

Gary, I've got the identical van, right down to the hazy plastic window trim.:disappoin My w/s wiper arms were rusty too when I bought the van ~4yrs ago. Really though, with minimal washings/waxings (I use NuFinish), the finish still looks really good on mine even after living it's whole life in the Buffalo NY area. The only problem area on mine is under the slider doors and hatch. It again is starting to bubble/rust. I had that addressed some years ago at ~36Kmi. As always, it's baaaaak! Basically I'm at the fix stuff as it breaks only mode with my Winny.

Well, if I can say anything about the Windstars, it's that they are consistent. I've got that same exact fade on the trim and I'm even losing some of the clearcoat off the off the rear paint.
The thing I'm dealing with right now is what Rodeo is talking about where the bottom of the doors is rotting. The one slider has lost about 2 inches all the way across the bottom of the door and the others are popping through. I cut out the "cancer" to try and keep it from spreading any more. I think I'm going to rivet on a piece of metal, skim it with waterproof bondo, and top it wit a grey spray on bedliner or Herculiner to match the bumper trim. I too live in Buffalo area and I notice that well over half the Winny's around have some sort of corrosion in the same area.
My wife and I were considering a newER van, but I've committed to saving the money and keeping this thing for at least another year. Problem is, I think this thing is going to nickle and dime me to death, but still if you look at the prices for vehicles now... I guess I'm just disappointed that I know I could get 200k out of this thing, but it just seems to have too many achillies heels.

Yup- my 2001 is doing the same thing with the door trim. I think I may have looked up that piece on 1stFordParts.com and they ran around $45 each. I may try a local salvage yard and see if those pieces are available. The rear tailgate is showing very slight signs of rust (bubbles under the paint right at the seam). Whenever I wax the van I put a glop of wax on that area and just leave it.
