Does anybody have an idea where the factory amplifier can be found in a 1997 Chevy Suburban LT? MY Suburban still has the original radio with tape deck and with the 1-disc CD player under the A/C controls. I have already replaced all 6 old '97 speakers with new ones, and I would also like to install a better aftermarket amp with a sub woofer.
I looked inside the rear quarter panels, under all seats, underneath the middle console.. I am running out of ideas..
Thanks in advance!

'98 C/K manual = Power Amplifier = "Under the left of the IP, right of the brake pedal bracket". According to my manual this is only for the rear speakers. There is also an "Audio Amplifier" listed as located under the center floor console.
Hope this helps..........Steve

Thanks, 777stickman! :)
I looked at the locations you have mentioned in your post, and.. surprise(!!!), above the brake pedal there is a small box with a 10-wire connector with the print "Audio Amplifier" on it. I disconnected the connector and the sound on the rear speakers just disappeared, so this must be it then! :)))
I already knew that the front speakers are not amplified, since the wires from the radio run straight to the door speakers. The mid and rear speaker wires are the ones that I wasn't able to trace back to the stock radio connector. Well, until today :) I can already see that the audio amplifier's wire colors match my rear speakers' wire colors. I'll do a complete mapping tomorrow to see what's what.
There is nothing in or under the center console in a 97 Suburban, by the way. I took the whole thing apart earlier today, until I could see the bare rug => Nothing.
Thanks again for the great info! :)

Glad I could help you out. The factory manual is sometimes vague on descriptions of what's what. That's the reason I mentioned the unit listed under the center console. (I think it has something to do with remote C/D changing, but??).................Steve

You probably have a factory amp and need the proper harness to power it.
