My daughters 96 sebring cooling fan is not running all the time. If I unplug the coolant sensor then the fan kicks on. I replaced the coolant sensor with no change. Fan does run with ac on and coolant sensor pluged in but only for short time. I purchased a realy but cannot locat where it goes. There is no relay for coolant fan in the box under the hood. In addition the wife drove the car and it over heated last night now runs rough at idle with check engine light on. The oil is still looking normal no milk shake apperance to it. No smoke from exhaust as well. Reving the car up a bit and it runs smooth. Can anyone offer suggestion and advise?

First pull the trouble codes and fix that problem. The fan does not run all the time. It runs when the coolent is over about 220 or when the A/C compressor is on. If it is not running with the A/C on check for a bad fan. Use 2 jumoer wires.

The fan doesnb't run with the ac off and then the engine overheats. With the ac on the fan only runs a few seconds at a time. I think I may have a bad relay however I cannot locate the relay to replace it. I can hot wire the fan and it will run all of the time. In addition it will run all of the time if I unplug the cooling sensor. On the way to autozone now to pull code. One of them I know is from me unplugging the coolant sensor nest to the thermostat.:banghead:

The fan should run for more than a few seconds with the A/C on. Yes it could be the relay but the computer also controls the relay by the signal it gets from the coolent sensor.

Where is the relay located? I looked in the power center under the hood and it's not there. At least there is isn't one labeled as such. I havbe purchased a relay from O'Reilly but can find where it goes.

I don't have a manual for that but try a search on the internet.

The relays are located under the air cleaner hose that goes to the throttle body. If you disconnect the hose or take the top off the filter cover you will see a small square box under the hose. Take the cover off and there are four relays. The two that are closest to the firewall are the two fan realys. I hope this helps. I too am having the problem but my fan wont come on at all and I have to keep turning on my heat inside the car when the heat goes up. I dont want to ruin my engine. I tried replacing the relays but it did not help. If any one has any other ideas please let me know.

The relays are located under the air cleaner hose going to the throttle body. It is just behind the fuse box in a square box with no markings on it. The positive cap strap goes right over the top of it. It unclips from each side of the box. You will find four Relays under it. Hope this helps

My 1996 JXI Ragtop also likes to "Boil" and overheat...We hardwired the fans to a toggle switch so that they run continuously whenever the car is on. Then, we made sure we had all fresh pure anti-freeze in it. We installed a new thermostat...and guess what? It STILL boils! The temp gauge usually stays at just under the 1/2 mark, and it seems fine. Lately, its been boiling even when it hits the lousy 1/2 way mark! Next are the relays/ or sensors. I am very frustrated with this problem, and the radiator was installed 2 yrs ago by a professional mechanic.

I can always tell when I'm low on anti freeze- either there's no heat, or no a/c til it's full of AF. Will let you know if we get the sensor/relay replaced and tell you what it does or doesn't do in terms of stopping this boiling over business. :banghead: :dunno::feedback::angryfire
