92 F150 Dies Randomly

My 92 F150 5.0 automatic has been randomly dying. I will be driving down the road and the motor will just shut off. No spitting or sputtering and no evidence of loss of voltage, just shuts off. Sometimes I can restart it right away, and sometimes it takes a few minutes to restart. When it won't restart it turns over like normal but no fire or no gas. I am pretty sure it not a gas problem as it does not act like it is starving for fuel. What electrically could cause the engine to shut down like that. Everything else electrically stays running, i.e. radio, lights, gauges. Or could the fuel pump or the relay suddenly get a twitch and shut down? I have ran the trouble codes and I first get a code 11 (system OK) for the current codes and then a code 18 (Loss of tachometer input/IDM circuit failure/SPOUT circuit grounded) for the stored memory codes. Any idea what this is and if it could be causing my problem?? What should I be looking for??

Sounds like the ignition system is disconecting. Check all primary and secondary wires. I could also be the ignition control module on the distributor. I have seen these go bad like this. Sometime it is just the wires connecting the pick-up to the module.

My experience would lead me to swap out the Ignition Module on the distributor that taillight was referring to. Look for corrosion at wires and make sure it is grounded properly to the distributor. Intermittent issues can be so hard to nail down!
Good luck

Did you figure out what was the matter? I have the same truck doing the same thing. I replaced the ignition mod. didn't help

I think I may have figured it out. I replaced the ignition coil Saturday and it has not died on me yet. Wiggle your ignition coil, mine had a lot of play in it and the new one did not.

Auto zone will check the module free if you take it in. I have a module tester but use a hair dryer to heat it up as they will test good until they are warm.
The pickup in the distributor will shut you down. You need a special puller to change it. Ford has a problem with wires wiggle the wires from the module and see if this makes a difference. Check the ground wire next to the computer in the pass side kick panel a loose wire will shut you down.

Try turning off your ac and heater and see if it runs fine. Thats what my 92 f150 does.

I had an ignition module and a pickup coil both cause that same problem. The pickup coil(it also gave no codes) in the distributor would short out every so often leading me to think it was the ignition module.... after replacing countless ignition modules i finally changed one one day and the truck still didnt start. Anyway it might be something else you may want to check if it runs fine for a week to a month without a problem then gives you the same problem again.

could be a cracked pickup coil in the distributor my e-150 had one and when it would die the broke peice would go back like it was new one day it didn't get back and was laying in the distributor. also the wires going to the ignition module run in the valley and go to the coil check that one isn't shorting as oil will lay in the valley and weaken the insulation on the wires. if the owner before you put an ignition module on and didn't put the dialectric cream on the back of it then it will get hotter than normal
