I have a 1998 Grand Caravan with a 3.3 engine. I have a a couple of instances where the battery light came on and the gauges went crazy. I suspect the alternator but am wondering if the alternator has the voltage regulator internally or if the voltage regulator is seperate.

The voltage regulator is built into the PCM. Before you replace anything, clean the battery terminals, batt neg to body, batt neg to engine, engine to body. Also, check the connector at the back of the alternator for corrosion. Gauge problems are very common with this vehicle. It can be caused by an intermittent in the circuit board power connection or a bad ground. Grounds are easy to clean--start there.

FYI, I had a weird issue last year on my 98 Grand Caravan - the gauges would mysteriously stop working. It turned out that the battery was starting to fail. I was puzzled because I could start and run the car fine. I changed the battery since it was approaching 5 yrs old anyway and things have been back to normal since.
