Porsche 962C 1/43-Rothmans 1987 Le Mans Winner

This is something I've been working lately. This a resin Profil 24 1/43 kit of the Rothman Porsche 962C that won the 1987 Le Mans race. I planned to built a high detail model, but, first I will start with the easier part...the body.

As always, I will use Gunze Sangyo primers for surface preparation. Before that I covered any imperfections with Evercoat putty.

Here I started with the Mr. Resin Primer. A couple of coats were needed in order to seal any imperfection.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05840.jpg

After it dried and do some sanding with the other primer, I airbrushed my favorite, Gunze Mr Surfacer 1000. It's a real thinn primer that after it dries need no sanding, and it being with some satin finish. Pay attention to the difference in color, it's like a blue-gray finish.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05841.jpg

After this primer stage, I followed with a Mr. White Base coat, it is needed since the model will painted white.

I started with some Tamiya Lacquer gloss white. You can see the result of the good Gunze mr. surfacer 1000. I decanted some paint I had at home, mixed with some Tamiya Lacquer thinner, and add some Mr Mild Retarder. Although I live in Puerto Rico, it was painted in this winter were it's not as hot as in the summer days. For those that haven't heard about the retarder before, It slow down the dry time of the paint and this avoid a little bit(if I can said totally) the orange peel effect. I mix everything and shoot it through my airbrush.

Here how the Tamiya gloss white performed. It almost needs no polishing.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05867.jpg

I did some masking before I paint the Tamiya blue at the sides of the model.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05869.jpg

Here it's how it being.

Next I will go with the decaling

Now it's the time were the fun really starts. In my opinion, after I built the 1/24 Tamiya counterpart of this model, I can say that even I didn't finish this model yet, it looks more impressive that the 1/24. I think it's the small size of this car.

Here we gonna see the decaled model. It is shown from different angles.I took almost 4 hours to complete and a lot of blower and decl setting applications. The model you guys see here, has been taped in the inside in order to show it as a whole body. Once it's completed, is a 3 pieces body with opened doors. Yes, it's a real intresting model, but, what I like the most is the historic Racing period it represents.

This something I've been working in the past weeks. I will do the front aluminum panel with some parts I will add.

Here you guys can see the stock front.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/p4303_det_1_z.jpg

To start I will substitute the lack of detail resin shocks for better detailed Tameo aluminum ones.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05930.jpg

The bases for the brake clipers and rotors also where altered to hold aftermarket sloted 2 part sloted rotors. Look at the right hand the kit's not sloted rotor with the non-altered base.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05937.jpg

Here the parts already installed.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05961.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05966.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05957.jpg

The kit just include small containers for clutch and brake fluids. I had some wiring and plumbing for it and also I sctratchbuilt the cilinders and add the connector nut.

OK, let's do final touches to the front section.

I wasn't happy with the resin air ducts, since I know a way to do a real one. I will do it from a tip I learned in MODEL CARS MAGAZINE from my good friend Gregg Nichols. It's real easy, just dip in clear acrylic varnish or in white glue(what I used) a spring made out of some thinn wire. Turn it from the upper part to the bottom part until it starts to dry. As soon it start to dry, with a toothpick, add (drop by drop) some paint to the inside tunnel of the spring. This drops helps to take out the excess of glue inside the tunnel, and at the same time paint the inside of the tunnel. When the glue dries clear, it shows the color of the paint. Just make sure that the first drop of glue you take goes to the paint jar, because, if not it will go to the outside and you guys will have to start over again. This is why it should be use acrylic paint.

Here you can see the resin part and the part I did. I cut the bases and brush painted it. Also added some Bare Metal Foil to simulate the metal tie wraps.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05973.jpg

Here all the parts together including the white ones for the rear brakes.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05969.jpg

Here, the finished part already mounted.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05987.jpg

The front aluminum apnel was added at this stage. The only sad part it's that all the wiring and plumbing of the brake system now it's hard to see and almost vanished.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05979.jpg

This is a final view of the whole section together. It looks much better in person to me.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05990.jpg

The front body panel was painted and decaled. As I said in the other posts, I used Tamiya X-15 Blue, witht he Tamiya Lacquer thinner, and a little bit of Gunze Sangyo retarder mild.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC06029.jpg

For this section I just scratchbuilt with some plastic bits the front signal light marker and an aftermarket Cibie decal. The projection lights were added at this stage.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC06039.jpg

Here the complete front section duo.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC06037.jpg

In the next section I will include the best part of the model,..the engine, which it's already started and almost finished.

A lot of progress on a very small model....nice job!!
I always wondered about the quality and detailing of that kit.
So far it looks like you're doing it good justice....although you make it look easier than i think it is :-)
I'm looking forward to the engine update.....and i'm thinking about some shopping...dang!!

You guys who do these small models amaze me. Looks fantastic. Is all the metal at the front included in the kit or are you scratch building these?

It looks great! The level of detail is amazing for such a small model! Front end looks terrific! Few words of critique if I may - I would use less "grainy" metallic paint for calipers and a-arms. I know that those headlight covers are really small, but you should trim them to fit - they spoil the look. Also, try to add some white glue "over the seams" and let it cure, then carefully wipe the excess with wet cloth - the seams will looks much cleaner.

Yes, that metal front is included in the kit. I only added some parts of the suspention.

Thanks!

Thaks Alex for your suggestions. Since I took these pictures, I've been thinking on re-do this parts, since, it were brush painted with Model Master enamel, I'm thinking to airbrush them to see how they look after. About the plastic headlights cover, it happened the same. When I was posting the pictures yesterday, I noticed it now more that other times, and, since it was already glued that was the way I was thinking to fix it. What happens is that these parts are so tiny that when you are seeing it, it's real hard to see. I will see how I re-do this. Keep looking, I will posting something on the engine.

Thanks to all you guys for look and for any suggestions.

Simon

OK, now now it's when the fire starts up. This is the main component of this model as it is on any sports car model.

Here I will start with the basic transmision section painting it with a 50/50 mix of Tamiya Gold leaf and Silver leaf acrylic paints. From any angle if represents a real model of the 962C engine despite it's 1/43 size. In this part the only work was with the jack that needed a change of angle, something I did succsesfully with some heat from the hair drier.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05894.jpg

After the basic painting, I followed it with a light wash and brush detailing of some parts as it is the hydraulic jack and the starter.

Here you can see the detail even on this tiny size.

The main engine block received the same treatment.

Here some of the main components after painting and wash section.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05902.jpg

Herer the turbos after detailng. As you guys can see hear, this parts look with som broken components, but, I already recived nice parts from Profil 24 and they were already replaced
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05914.jpg

Stacks received an Alclad II Polish Aluminum Finish.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05912.jpg

The water tank didn't looked real enough to me, so, I scratchbuilt it with some aluminum tubing. Just cut and polish.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC05923.jpg

Remember in the last post I didn't like the shock look either, so I also replaced the rear ones too with Tameo ones.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC06002.jpg

OK time to show something....

Here you guys can see a section of what I done until now...here, the distributor, coil, and water tank are scratchbuilt items, distributor and coil from plastic and water tank from aluminun as I mentioned already.

Here the water tank attached to the overflow tank. You can see extra hole for more plumbing.

Looks awesome, my only criticism, but mind you I havent seen any reference pics either, the hose to the water tank seems quite big as compared to the rest of the engine, and also, not much colour variation between engine block, gearbox etc. Like I said, maybe that is what the real one looks like, just my two cents. Maybe it will look different once it goes on the chassis.
But it is amazing work in such a small scale.

Thanks for your kind comments. I like a lot, and I mean a lot, your 1/43 model cars site, specially my favorite car maker, the Porsches. They're excellent. A question, do you know if that Martini 917L from BBR or any of their 917k's can be found? Let me know any time you can. You can check this link for my 1/43 Tameo Ferrari 312T.

Ok, I've been working on this model for a while, now, I feel that it's time to finish it. First of all, for all those doesn't know, after I returned from the GSL I lost all my 3 cameras at the airport including my digital one. After that, I've been a little bit lazy and without any motivation since I didn't have a digital camera to document my projects. Well, I'm back already in bussiness after I bought a new Nikon D80. Since I was building it before my camera arrived, almost of the building steps now I showing are completed and there's no step by step at this time, nevertheless, after this I will do as I always have done.

Like I did with my Tameo 1/43 Ferrari 312T(2007 GSL Small Scale winner), after I have almost the model completed but wasn't satisfied with what I was seeing, I proceed to take apart almost the whole model again and re-start to build it. With the Ferrari worked out very fine and I feel that I did the correct decision with this one too. I felt that some parts where no as real as they are supposed to be, so, I start to scratchbuilt some of them. The only and main problem was, as you guys can imagine...the Scale!!, there's no much for it around here in America.

Here you guys can see one of the original engine's picture. Everything looks clean but a little bit out of realism, to me it looked like a mosquito trying to fly :D. I think that the shocks(being Tameo formula ones) are thinn and the tubing of the chassis is round and not flat as it's the photoetch part. With all the work at the
moment then, the stacks covers alclad II painting were loosing its plating. Also the thinn braided line looked like a fishing line with not metal look et all.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC06025.jpg

This picture from the same side can show what I've been talking about. You guys can see the round tubing of the chassis, the lever that connects with the transmition, thicker springs on the shocks, I added the same homemade cooling airducts for the rear that I used for the front suspention. At this stage I added the rear brake discs too, but, no calipers and lines yet.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC_0159.jpg

A picture from the rear.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC_0176.jpg

In this picture you guys can see how all the new components give new life to this historic racing model. Now you can see more red and blue due to the amount of a&n fittings I've been adding to the engine. These are from the R&B Motion line. Braided line are from the Detail Master and PRO-TECH catalogs. The thinner braided it's handcraft metalic line, a perfect one for 1/43, and 100 feet for $7, I think it's not bad!....almost a lifelong supply of this line. You guys can see here also a better view of the stacks covers, re-painted this time with Alclad II Polished Aluminum and "soldered" to the aluminum radiators.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y288/Porsnatic/DSC_0164.jpg

The rear section received the braided line for the hydraulic lift jack and a scrathbuilt filter for the oil radiator. This section will also receive later the calipers for the brake discs and it's lines.

An aerial view of everything together. Sorry for the blurring, I've still to master this camera settings since this was made the day after I received the macro lens, hand held without any tripod.

The 312T is really well done. Great attention to detail. As far as finding an old BBR kit. What can I say other that the hoping one shows up on Ebay. You can try asking BBR at their web site, or going to some of the retailers like http://www.little-cars.co.uk/ or http://www.sirio.com/icaro/. Peggy at Model Car Masterpieces. She doesn't have a web site, but I think a google search can get you a phone number. Not sure who else to try. Good luck in search.
