Guys,
I need help !! I did the procedure to get rid of the 171 & 174 codes today. I did everythibg correct as far as I can tell ? Now it runs really rough. Engige light blinks an books says it misfiring (more now). It runs so rough it almost stalls. When I listen to the engine from the front of the car you can hear a hissing from the front passanger side. Think I connect all lines correcly and bolts are correct tightness. Ant ideas ??

This look like a big vacuum lost.
The EGR vacuum regulator is located behind the engine very close to the ignition coil; there is a vacuum connector (twin) that could be a possibility if not connected but probably not enough to stop the engine. But there is another vacuum hose, just on the left of the EGR regulator that is plugged in the intake manifold spacer ( the plastic part between the plenum and the intake manifold). Be sure that this hose is connected because I think it is big enough to cause a very rough idlle or stop the engine and could be the hissing that you hear.
Are you sure that you did not overtighted the plenum or the isolator bolts, the Haynes book give a confusing torque specification for intake manifold bolts; a cracked manifold or plenum could bring a severe vacuum lost.

Did you disconnect plug wires? Sounds to me like they are not all correct.

Guys I took it to the mechanic. I did tighen to 11 ft-lbs (bolts) about the same with Plenum bolts. Also, took off some spark plug wires. I don't have the time to correct so I took it in. Hopefully, I just forgot a vaccium line ??We'll see.

I hope they dont charge an arm and a leg for something you forgot to connect and they have to try to find. Ouch!!

Guys,
Thanks for the input. It was two things: 1) I left a vaccum hose off and 2) the number 5 & 6 wires were crossed. Can't believe I crossed wires, that's a rookie mistake. They also replaced the back 3 plugs and wires I had sitting on my front seat. Total cost including tax $ 133. I think I got away cheap. Runs absolutely GREAT !!!
Again, thanks for your posts !!

You just found an honest mechanic.. Could have said it was something else. I work for Goodyear and a good while back went to get tires for other car I had.I was at a Goodyear store which was independently owned. The guy comes to me and said you need brakes. I said thats ok I will do it myself. I Stopped for a second and said HEY!! I just replaced them last month. Of course I had a few words for him. Needless to say the business sold to new owners and they are better.. Not just of my complaint but from many others...

I agree, ... you've apparently found yourself a good and honest mechanic. Now if I could find one, I would give up my un-paying position of "family mechanic" and really retire.
But for now, let's see ... just finished one daughter's Nissan today ... another daughter's Mazda MPV is next, gotta remove the heads and see what total damage was caused by driving with low/no coolant! Don't know if my problem is too many cars ... or too many kids!

I have certainly made my share of rookie mistakes.....
I found a very nice independant shop near me that I use.
When I change my plugs and wires......my trick is to ONLY remove 1 at a time.
Sometimes it takes a bit longer to do the job....but I am sure to get it right.
For front end inspections.....there is no way that I have the skills, or equipment to do it right.....same for a number of other jobs.
There is NO replacement for HONESTY.....and I have my share of stories to tell about shops that have not had me darken their doorway again.
