2000 burb 4wd 1500
125k miles, 4 new tires as of this week
when accelerating or decelerating between 30-55 mph drivers side sounds like a low flying helicopter/airplane. Any clues?

If this just started after replacing all 4 tires it could just be the noise from the new tires. What type of tire did you get put on? Something like a BFG AT/KO will make more noise than a less aggressive road tire.

Thought problem was tires and went to have them rotated and balanced. Told they were cupped etc and by winter we would need new. I went ahead and got new then (Kelley Tires) and the noise continues. I know I need to take it in for a wheel alignment and that is scheduled for tomorrow. It pulls to the right.

Another idea could be the fan clutch. I had this stay on in a 99 suburban and anytime you gave it gas it sounded something like you mentioned. just my 2 cents.

Thanks as you can see I am looking for any ideas. I will investigate the fan clutch. As I tentatively drove it tonight and tried to think of sounds it reminds me of, I also thought it sounds like when driving on a freeway and a semi passes in the other lane. The loud hum of the semi. It doesn't seem to matter if the AC is on or not. I also didn't notice the wheels being so out of alignment until they replaced the 4 tires. I am grasping at straws for ideas. I don't want to take it in and describe the noise to the mechanic and have him look at me and tell me whatever since I am a female.

If you have the one piece aluminum drive shaft you need to check your UV joints! I have had a ton of burbans vibrating in that speed/rpm range that have ate the joints up. Its typically at the trans.
Do you have a nasty clunk noise when shifting from D to R? When the joints gets excessively worn it will start to do that.
Try this and post results! Drive the burb and get it to make the noise. Is it different on the gas vs coasting? What happens when you knock it in N while the noise is heard? During the noise, pull it out of D into 3, see if the noise increases with the engine RPM or stays with the rotation of the tires.
You need to narrow down some specifics if you want accurate help. This goes for this site and the dealership.
FOOT NOTE!!!
Get over the whole "woman in a dealership" junk. Fact is most dealers are too busy to try to pull one over on someone and if anything you could get better service being a woman. The tech has two jobs, fix the complaint and see what 'service' needs to be completed over and above. Also, many times the tech that fixes the car will NEVER MEET YOU much less know what chromozomes you were born with. You will work through the service advisor, many whom are women themselves.

The burb doesn't vibrate. There is no clunking sound or any sound period when shifting from P to D to R etc. The noise is related to the speed of the burb and is loud when driving it between 30-55 mph whether accelerating or decelerating. I have looked online for info about the universal joint and the noise that is described online on multiple sites doesn't sound like what I hear. I however haven't ruled this out. In March, I had the U joint rear axle replaced and the right inner tie Rod End and a wheel alignment. It doesn't matter if you hit the gas, coast or hit the brakes.
I realize that the counter workers are usually females, but I usually also talk to the mechanic himself especially if the counter worker cannot fully explain me to me what is going on.

How hard is it to change the struts and shocks on my 2000 burb? Can my husband and I do this? They have never been done 125k miles

Shocks are not hard at all to change. Raise vehicle safely, remove tire, take off the top nut, and take off the bottom nut holding shock on. Install is reverse procedure, tighten nuts to proper torgue specs, make sure the lug nuts are tighten to the proper torgue specs also.
I just replaced all of mine on 2004 suburban, and took less than 2 hours, cost was $200.00.

Hey thanks ~ sounds like my husband and I can do the shocks. What about the struts?

No struts on a 2000 burban. Just shocks front and rear; although, the auto ride feature requires special shocks in the rear.

The front shocks can give you a hard time pending if its a 2wd or a 4wd. 2wd models have spring over shocks. They have to be unbolted above the upper control arm. Access to the top bolts are limited which is only a problem if the shock shaft spins with the bolt. Sometimes a pair of vicegrips through the springs is enough however many times in the past a torch and careful hand was needed.
