looking at '85 635csi - anything I should look for?

I'm looking at a '85 635 csi - the car could be a total steal. It runs good, seems sound. It's got 263,000 miles, looks to be in fair condition. I have no background information. I'm buying it from a friend who owns a tow company and it was impounded by police and owner can't pay bill so he's walking away from it (young kid). No title problems, it seems good just neglected. I'm not expecting a "no problem" car but just wondering if there are any particular problem areas that these cars had or things to look out for. My husband has always built muscle cars for fun but I love the BMW's and we thought this 6 might be a nice change. I can get it for $1500 maybe $1000; body looks good except for minor damage on one fender, no rust, paint looks good for 20+ years but clear coat is peeling in spots. Any help, suggestions or advice appreciated my husband will never let me hear the end of it if it tanks but he will work on it and I have access to some other friends who are mechanics so I don't have to rely on shops. Am I crazy for doing it? It's not going to be an everyday driver just want to restore it and enjoy. I've always loved the 6 series. Be waiting to hear. Thanks!

I just bought a 1989 635csi. Ihave asked all the questions and there is a some good info at the big coupe page. have the car checked out. Mine has 108k interior and body in very good condition. needs shocks, rims tires, and some mechanical work.

What kind of rims and tires are on yours? Mine has the TRX michelins. they are old and expensive to replace because they are metric. check for dry rot on the tires if they are the trx. good luck!
