Override automatic transmission computer?

I have a 94 trooper that the transmission will go into neutral when going from 1 to any other gear. I recently picked up a used transmission from someone that said if I unplug some connector I should be able manual shift my transmission. Does anyone know what connector he is talking about or if this is really something that would work. If this is true I would not mind driving the car around by manually shifting it till I could find time this winter to replace the transmission.

you can disconnect the trans computer so that the electronics part of the set up isn't activated; maybe even try just disconnecting the AT Mode Selector switch/sensor to see if that alone would work. it'd be ok for a bit; i don't know the long-term ramifications though.

however, what do you mean "" ...the transmission will go into neutral when going from 1 to any other gear"" ?

do you mean the dash indicator indicates N neutral or that it actually does go into N (full rpm when gunned, no other symptoms), or is it possibly slipping ?

Where do I disconnect the computer at? The transmission if placed in drive will take off fine but when the transmissions trys to shift to 2nd and acts like it is neutral even though the indicators says it is still in drive. You can place the transmission in 1 st and it will stay in 1 st. Place the transmission in another gear, 2, 3, or D it will work fine till it tries to shift to second then just seems to be in neutral. With the transmission in any gear once it tries to go to second and starts slipping like it is in neutral I have to stop the car and it will start off again in 1 st just fine.

Hello,Sounds to me like you are dealing with the 2-3 clutch packs are worn out, or you have a hydraulic pressure problem in the transmission. Check your fluid to see if it has the nice red color, or if it has turned brown or even worse dark gray. If it is definitely brown that means that you have worn off your clutch material off the bands and your trans needs an overhaul. If it is gray you have worn past the clutch friction material and into the metal bands. If it is still red then I would say it is an electric/electronic problem perhaps a loose ground or corroded connection going to the transmission.Rich
